This article will explain in detail how to use the web browser under DOS. The editor thinks it is very practical, so I share it with you as a reference. I hope you can get something after reading this article.

DOS is a very powerful operating system, so its functions are more comprehensive. In recent years, with the development of the network, network software is very important. Therefore, there are a lot of corresponding software under DOS in recent years, the most important of which is the web browser. These web browsers under DOS can be divided into two categories: graphic browsers and text browsers. Among them, Arachne is the most powerful and famous one of the former. The latter has Lynx,Minuet and so on. Here's how to use them.

The latest version of Arachne is 1.70 and can be downloaded from the DOS Software. It has many network functions, in addition to the usual FTP,HTTP functions, but also supports POP3/SMTP to send and receive mail, install a variety of plug-ins and other functions. It can also be used as an offline browser, just like a graphical file manager, which can be used to run programs (including looking at pictures, listening to music, etc.) and file manipulation. It supports a variety of Internet access, such as dial-up Internet access, network card Internet access (including CABLE,ADSL, etc.) it supports. However, if you want to access the Internet, you can't just have these hardware. in addition to the hardware modems, drivers must be installed to access the Internet with other devices, otherwise you can't use them. For specific methods, see "networking methods under DOS" in "DOS usage".

Let's start to introduce the setup and use of Arachne. After downloading its installer ARCHN170.EXE, which is less than 1m in size, you can run it directly under DOS. After entering the path you want to install, it will be decompressed automatically without manual operation. After decompression, it will prompt you to select the video card you use, generally choose VGA or VESA. Once it starts running, it will appear a setup wizard, such as the computer type, and it will automatically select, just press NEXT. Soon we will come to the Internet Settings menu (file://setup.htm), of which there are three options, the one on the left (PPP Wizard) uses a modem to dial up the Internet, the middle one (Packet Wizard) uses a network card to access the Internet, such as CABLE,ADSL, and the right one (Manual Setup) uses manual settings. In general, you can choose the one on the left or in the middle according to your Internet access. The setup of Arachne is very easy, you can follow its setup wizard, and you can go back at any time. For example, after testing the modem, it will prompt you to enter the phone number, user name and password to dial, then go to the dial screen, select "Dial" and dial automatically. After testing the network card, you can choose "BOOTP/DHCP" or set the TCP/IP protocol, if you think it has been set up, you can directly choose the former, it will automatically initialize the BOOTP/DHCP, generally as long as the hardware is connected, there will be no problem. Of course, you can also set the TCP/IP protocol manually, sometimes for better results.

Arachne has a lot of functions, and of course it's not just about network settings. You can also set its on-screen display, install plug-ins to complete more functions, and so on. Aren't there many icons at the top of the screen? For example, "Desktop" means the desktop, where there are many features, such as browsing your computer, using applications, and setting personal options. You can set the Arachne display color, various effects, home page, etc., and many others in the options. There are many icons at the top of the screen, such as viewing history and email. Arachne also has a full-screen help function, and you can press F1 at any time to get detailed help. In addition to F1 key, there are many other functional keys, such as F3 key to enter the URL in the address bar, F4 key to edit the document, F5 key to choose between a variety of display interfaces, F6 key to view the source code of the web page, F7 key to find the function, F9 key to redraw the screen, F10 key to return to the desktop, ESC key to interrupt the entry or exit of the Arachne,Ctrl+ page, the left key head is to go back to the previous page, and the right head of the Ctrl+ key is to move forward to the next page. * the key toggles the full screen (like the F11 key in IE). For the rest, please see the "function key list" in F1 help. In addition to the function keys, there are many shortcuts, such as Alt+D dialing immediately, Alt+E Shell to DOS, press EXIT to return, Alt+Q to enter shortcut notepad, Alt+X quit Arachne,Alt+F1 to go to the home page, Ctrl+L to find the next, Ctrl+P print screen, and so on. If you use it often, with the proficiency of the operation, you will find everything very simple.

Although the function of Arachne is very powerful, it has a big weakness for Chinese people, that is, it does not support Chinese (that is, Chinese can only be displayed as garbled). Although it supports many languages, it is mainly other languages in Europe and does not have Chinese, Japanese and Korean (CJK) languages. To view Chinese, a graphical browser is obviously not appropriate (unless it has a Chinese version) and can only be used in text browsers under Chinese DOS systems, such as Lynx. In terms of interface, Lynx is certainly not as good as Arachne, but it is fast because it is text-based, and it can view Chinese web pages and enter Chinese characters. The way to view or input Chinese web pages is very simple, first start the Chinese character system (such as CCDOS97, UCDOS, etc., it is recommended to use CCDOS97 for the best results) and then run Lynx. However, if it is so simple to run, then there are some Chinese characters garbled when you look at the Chinese web page, this is because the default character set of Lynx is set to the Western character set, you need to change its default setting to completely eliminate these garbled codes, the method is to set "CHARACTER_SET:euc-cn" in the LYNX.CFG file, and then start Lynx later to display Chinese characters normally. For your convenience, I provide the modified LYNX.CFG file here, which you can download here (just replace the original LYNX.CFG file with it): http://firststep.ahwww.com/dosware/lynx.cfg

Lynx is not as powerful as Arachne's setup wizard, but it is also relatively simple, such as loading the Packet driver of network equipment (such as network cards, modems, etc.) (see the "DOS usage" column of this site, "networking under DOS") after running Lynx, it will automatically initialize BOOTP/DHCP (you can also specify the IP address manually, etc.), and you can surf the Internet after success. It has many buttons, such as pressing the left and right arrows forward / backward, up and down arrows to switch links, G key to enter the URL, Q key to exit, O key to set options, H key to view help, and so on. You can also press Ctrl+C or Ctrl+ break to exit it at any time when running Lynx to return to DOS. In fact, it also has a lot of features, such as supporting the HTTPS protocol and supporting the Frame structure (but it does not display all Frame at the same time, but displays the names of all Frame, and you can choose the appropriate name to enter the content in their respective Frame). In addition, Lynx can also be used as an offline browser to view a variety of Chinese and English HTML web pages in the computer, the effect is very good. If you only want to use it as an offline browser, you can edit the LYNX.CFG file to set the starting page of Lynx to the local address, and then load any Packet drivers (including its own NULLPKT, that is, empty Packet drivers, such as executing the NULLPKT 0x60 command) before starting Lynx.
