Nothing, a consumer technology brand led by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, plans to launch its first smartphone next month, according to a report by TechCrunch. The company has reportedly been working on the phone for more than a year, and Pei is said to have shown a prototype to executives of companies such as Qualcomm at this week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The April release will come less than a year after the company released its first product, a pair of wireless earplugs called Ear 1. It is reported that the phone will contain design elements similar to earplugs, such as the use of transparent components, although other details of the new device are limited. TechCrunch cites sources that have direct knowledge of the company's plans.

I.M. Pei has always been clear that he hopes Nothing will expand into more product categories over time. In an interview with The Verge in January last year, Pei said that the plan was ultimately to provide an ecosystem of different devices, and the following month, Nothing bought the rights to the Essential brand, which launched an Android smartphone in 2017 and then shut it down less than three years later. Last November, a company executive said that Nothing had five new products under development.

Lately, I.M. Pei seems to have been teasing some kind of Android announcement. On February 15, the executive said on Twitter that he "returned to Android" only because both Android and Snapdragon brand accounts posted similar mysterious flirting in response. Even Nothing's official brand account joked that "March will be fun."
