Shulou(Shulou.com)06/01 Report--

This article mainly introduces how to install and update the software on openSUSE. It is very detailed and has a certain reference value. Friends who are interested must read it!

YaST2 is a powerful tool for dealing with software packages. You can install or remove packages, update or even protect packages from being deleted or modified. OpenSUSE comes with a large number of software packages, and there are many more packages that can be easily installed by adding additional software sources for YaST software management.

You may be considering moving to SUSE or openSUSE for a number of reasons. For some, integrating Linux into a business environment is a reasonable step (SUSE's fee-based support service is outstanding, and the openSUSE community is always happy to help). For others, SUSE or openSUSE is one of the most advanced user-friendly Linux distributions on the market.

No matter why you are considering migrating to the SUSE ecosystem (whether through SUSE or openSUSE), it's best to know the tools you need to get the job done before you make a bold move. Fortunately, like the entire Linux community, package management is an extremely user-friendly task-- if you know what you're looking for.

Some distributions make the process of managing software extremely easy. Take Ubuntu Linux, for example! The most conspicuous position on the Launcher is the Ubuntu software center icon. Click the icon to search for thousands of applications to be installed. If it's an openSUSE, you won't find the launcher in a conspicuous position, but the tool is easy to find and easy to use.

Explore openSUSE's package management world in depth from the perspective of GUI. After reading this article, you should be able to easily install software, update machines, and even add software libraries (so you can install third-party applications).

All you need is YaST2.

One of the things that stand out about the SUSE world is that they focus most of their systems administration on a tool called YaST2 (another setup tool). You can handle a lot of things from YaST2-one of which is managing the software on the system.

I'm going to use the latest versions of openSUSE and KDE desktops. If you choose the GNOME desktop environment, this doesn't change YaST (just how you find YaST2).

The easiest way to find YaST2 is to open the KDE "K" menu and type "yast" in the search bar (see figure 1). After the YaST2 item appears, click it to launch the tool.

Once YaST2 is open, click the Software (software) item on the left navigation panel (see figure 2) to display all available software-related items.

Install softwar

The first point I want to demonstrate is how to install a software. It's a piece of cake. From the Software section of YaST2, click Software Management and wait for the software management system to open.

1. Enter the name of the software you want to install in the search bar.

two。 Click Search.

3. After the software appears in the main panel, click the relevant check box (see figure 3).

4. Click Accept.

5. Browse for dependencies (a pop-up window appears).

6. If the dependency is acceptable, click Continue.

7. Let the installation process complete.

8. When the software is installed, click Finish.

okay! You have officially installed the first software on openSUSE.

Update softwar

One of the most important things you can do with YaST2 is to update the system. Updates are critical because they often contain security patches and fixes. Updates can be processed from the same subsection (software) of YaST2. In this subsection, you will find an item named Online Update (online updates). Click on this item and YaST2 will check for available updates. After the inspection, the system displays a complete list of available updates (see figure 4).

Use YaST2 to update the system.

By default, all available upgrades are selected for processing. You can comb through the list of packages and don't choose any packages you don't want to upgrade. However, if you decide to remove packages from the upgrade list, be aware that they will also affect other upgrades. If there is no problem with the list, click Accept and the upgrade will begin.

Note: in some cases (like upgrading any Adobe package), you may have to accept the end user license Agreement (EULA). There may be conflict resolution to deal with. If you want to solve any problem, click Continue when you see the dependency solution. If the kernel is updated, YaST will tell you that a reboot is necessary. To move on to the next step after the reminder, you have to click Continue (continue, see figure 5).

Restart is essential.

This process may take some time, depending on how many updated versions are available. Wait patiently, or start managing your other machines or networks. Once the update is complete, restart the machine (if prompted) and now you can enjoy the latest version of the software package.

Add a software library

Now let's explore the operations that may be more difficult for beginners. First of all, what is a software library? The software library is the online location where the packages to be installed are placed. The openSUSE platform has its own official software library, and many other applications have their own software libraries. When you search YaST2 for a piece of software to install (you do know that there is a version of software for Linux), but it doesn't appear in the search results, it's probably because YaST2 doesn't know where to find it. Because of this, you have to tell YaST2 where to find the software: the software library.

For example, you want to install Google Chrome browser on openSUSE. To do this, you have to add the official Google software library first. The steps are as follows:

1. Open YaST2

two。 Click Software (Software) on the left panel

3. Click Software Repositories (Software Library) on the right panel

4. From the software library, click Add (add, see figure 6)

Figure 6: adding a new software library

5. Select Specify URL (specify URL) and click Next (next)

6. Name the software library Google Chrome

7. Enter URL: http://dl.google.com/linux/rpm/stable/i386 (see figure 7)

8. Click Next (next)

9. Click OK (OK)

10. Click Yes (if prompted) to accept the GnuPG key

Note: if you use a 64-bit machine, the above URL will be replaced with http://dl.google.com/linux/rpm/stable/x86_64.

At this point, you can now go back to the Software Management section, search for Google Chrome, and install it (see figure 8).

Figure 8: you can now install Google Chrome on openSUSE

If you find the package you want to install on openSUSE, but it doesn't appear in YaST2, do a search on Google search engine, and you should find available software libraries for that platform.

It is not at all difficult to manage software on openSUSE. Once you know where to find the software and what to do, you can install and update the software like a professional.
