To make Chrome OS an operating system for everyone and for everyone, Google plans another major upgrade to give Linux applications access to Android folders.

The current situation is that Chrome OS devices can run Chrome applications, Google Play store Android applications, and Linux applications, thanks to the support of Debian.

However, for obvious security reasons, each platform runs in its own closed sandbox. The only location accessed from these three platforms is the downloads folder, which obviously makes sense because users need to be able to access files obtained from web all the time.

Future updates are expected to further push things forward by unlocking access to the contents of the "Play files" folder of the Linux application. This will enable Linux applications to access the Android application folder as if they had chosen to access Downloads.

Safety problem

This means that users will face fewer restrictions when moving data from one operating system to another, but at the same time it has raised concerns that security may be affected by the lifting of barriers.

Basically, sandboxing should prevent any malicious files from endangering another platform on the same device, and restricting access to Downloads folders is a very effective way.

However, once Linux applications have access to more folders, including Android's own data, a potential vulnerability may cause more damage and may eventually fail to obtain the required information.

Currently, this is just a commit found in Chromium Gerrit source control, so the idea is still in its early stages. When and whether Google wants to complete the project remains to be seen, but if so, dealing with these security issues may be the hardest part of the job.
