Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced storage technology, announced today that its second production line in Pyeongtaek, South Korea has begun mass production of the industry's first 16 Gb (Gb) LPDDR5 mobile DRAM with extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) technology. Based on Samsung's third-generation 10nm (1z) technology, the new 16Gb LPDDR5 has the highest mobile memory performance and maximum capacity, allowing more consumers to enjoy all the benefits of 5G and AI features in the next generation of smartphones.

Expand the production capacity of Pingze Plant
Samsung's Pyeongze Line 2 covers an area of more than 128900 square meters (more than 1.3 million square feet), equivalent to about 16 football fields, and is by far the largest semiconductor production line.
The new Pinze production line will become a key manufacturing center for the industry's most advanced semiconductor technology, providing state-of-the-art DRAM and next-generation V-NAND and OEM solutions, while consolidating the company's leading position in the industrial 4.0 era.
Mobile storage with the fastest and largest capacity
Based on state-of-the-art (1z) process nodes, Samsung's new 16Gb LPDDR5 is the first mass-produced memory in EUV technology, providing the fastest speed and maximum capacity in mobile DRAM.
The new LPDDR5 is 6400 megabits per second (Mb/s), which is about 16% faster than the 12Gb LPDDR5 (5500Mb/s) in most current flagship mobile devices. After being packaged in 16GB, LPDDR5 can transmit about 10 5GB full HD movies or 51.2GB data in one second.
Thanks to the first commercial 1z process, the LPDDR5 package is 30% thinner than its predecessor, allowing 5G and multi-camera smartphones and collapsible devices to integrate more features into ultra-thin designs. 16Gb LPDDR5 only needs 8 chips to build 16Gb package, while the predecessor based on 1Y needs 12 chips (8 12Gb chips and 4 8Gb chips) to provide the same capacity.
Samsung plans to provide global smartphone makers with the first 1z-based 16GB LPDDR5 suite in 2021, further strengthening its position in the flagship mobile device market. Samsung will also expand the temperature range by expanding the use of LPDDR5 products to automotive applications.
