Today, when I was learning WINSERVER 2016, the teacher talked about nano server and wanted to give it a try. It is found that most of the tutorials online are about how to create a vhdx virtual machine using the Windows Powershell tool and then mount it using a hyper-V virtual environment. Because the working environment of our company is mostly vMware virtualized environment, we also need to convert VHDX files into vmdk format data files that vmware can recognize. This article mainly introduces how to create and mount NANO servers to ESXI hosts.

Environmental preparation

1.Windows10 Professional Edition

2.Windows Server 2016 simplified Chinese version

1. Obtain the NanoServer image file

Locate the local Windows Server 2016 image file and mount it to the CD drive

Copy the NanoServer folder to the local disk (I copied it to the root directory of the E disk)

Start the Windows PowerShell console (run as administrator, must)

4. Change to the NanoServer directory on E disk.

Use the command to query the current policy settings of PowerShell

The query result is restricted by Restricted, so we need to modify the security policy

VI. Modify PowerShell security policy

View the result of modification

Import NanoServer with its own PowerShell module (in NanoServerImageGenerator under the NanoServer folder)

* * Import module can create NanoServer disk image file

Create a disk image file in VHDX format

Enter the password of the Administrator user: P@ssw0rd (to log in later, don't forget! )

It is customary to enter 8 digits, letters plus numbers. After the input is completed, the disk image file E:\ vhd\ Nano.vhdx will be generated.

-MediaPath specifies the root path of ISO

-BasePath specifies a folder to create replication server repackaging

-TargetPath specifies a path that contains the file name and extension to create VHDX or VHD

-Computer_name specifies the computer name

After completion, the figure is as follows:

Open the storage directory and find that a data file named nano.vhdx has been generated

Open a vMware vSphere virtual machine that has been deployed in the network, and mount the vmware tools tool in the editing configuration

Create a new folder VMware_Tools_Extracted on disk E, and copy the files from the vmware tools disc to the following folder (here the folder location can be created at will)

Use the following command to release the vmtools installation file setup64.exe driver to the VMware _ Tools_Extracted folder of the E disk, and the following installation interface pops up after the command is executed

Next, select the VMware_Tools_Extracted folder you just created on the E disk.

Click install, and then view the contents of the E disk folder VMware_Tools_Extracted as shown in the following figure.

Install the VMware driver using the DISM tool

Create a new folder mountdir on disk E

Use DISM to mount the newly generated Nano.vhdx file

After mounting, the mountdir folder of E disk becomes a disk icon.

Copy the VMware driver folder in VMware_Tools_Extracted you just extracted to the root directory of the E disk.

The path is long. Just find the corresponding folder.

Use DISM to install the VMware driver, which mainly contains the following three files

Install vcscsi.inf

Install vmci.inf (note the path where the file is located)

Install vmxnet3.inf (note the path where the file is located)

DISM can install the patch pack based on the generated vhdx, and the OEM driver package needs to be installed (otherwise it cannot be started)

This step takes a long time, please wait patiently, my machine configuration is higher, it will be completed in a few minutes.

Commit DISM installation changes

So far, we have loaded the driver file into the new nano.vhdx file (the file size has changed from 500m to 600m)

Convert VHDX image to VMware format image

Install StarWind V2V Image Converter software, it is easy to find online, Baidu can do it, the operating interface is as follows

Click Next, select Local file, and click Next

Select the VHDX file you just generated, Next

Choose different formats according to different VM systems, refer to the following:

Vmware growable image for vmware workstation

Vmware direct conversion to ESXI for vmware vSphere ESXI

Select the ESXI server connection information that needs to be exported to the network, NEXT

Select the data file storage location and data file name, NEXT

Conversion is in progress until complete

Log in to the ESXI host, click Storage, click Browse Storage File, and check that the nano.vmdk file has been copied to the MCSE-NANO folder

12. Create a new VMware virtual machine

1. Click New Virtual Machine to use custom mode (here I use the workstation console to remotely my vCenter server, using the traditional web version of the same operation)

two。 Select the server virtual machine installation location

3. Select which ESXI virtual host to install to, and click next

4. Select the location of the virtual machine storage disk and click next

5. To configure virtual machine hardware compatibility, select the ESXI installation version here, and click next.

6. Select the operating system type and click next

7. Enter virtual machine name

8. Select UEFI mode

9. Configure the hardware resources of the virtual machine, which can be adjusted according to the hardware conditions here. Because the NANO server takes up less resources, the basic 2 CPU,512M memory is enough.

10. The memory defaults to 4G. Click NEXT.

11. Select a network connection, where you select the previously defined MCSE network

The 12.SCSI controller is available by default.

13. Select SCSI for disk type

14. Use previously uploaded nano.vmdk data files

15. After the virtual machine is created, click finish to open the virtual machine.

XIII. Start the virtual machine

Turn on the virtual machine, and the interface after startup is shown in the following figure

User name is the administrator Password is the password set in the previous eight steps

Domain remains empty

After entering the car, the following figure is shown

At this point, the NANO server is installed on the ESXI host, and the parameter configuration can be planned according to the actual needs. I will not elaborate on it here. Remember to pop up the image file loaded above! )
