Switches are Layer 2 devices that work at the data link layer and are used for trunk and PC access. The most common switches are Ethernet switches, telephone switches, and fiber optic switches.

Development of switches:

v Hub: should be named HUB, working in the physical layer, docking received signals for regeneration ×× amplification, for relay.

v Bridge: The earliest switch, also known as bridge, used for two local area network forwarding devices.

v Switch: Used for line relay and PC access in local area network.

V three-layer switch: working in the second and third layers, that is, the function of the switch can also use the function of the router.

Switch working principle: source-based learning, forwarding based on MAC address table, broadcast without table.

Switches are used for local communication, the same segment, depending on MAC addresses.

Operating mode of switch:

V simplex: unidirectional transmission of data at both ends.

V Half duplex: Data transmission in both directions, but not simultaneously.

v Full duplex: Bidirectional transmission of data at both ends, but simultaneously.

Switch management and configuration:

v Console interface: Administrators can manage and configure switches through Console port. Console is serial port. If you want to connect PC, you need serial port to USB port cable connection. PC can connect Console through SecureCRT tool for management. The baud rate of serial port is 9600.

v Telnet Remote: Administrators can also configure switches remotely over the network via the Telnet protocol, but only if the network is interoperable and the switch is configured with VTY.

Switch brand: CISO Cisco, Huawei, H3C, etc.

Cisco is a standardized manufacturer. Cisco's equipment uses proprietary protocols developed independently. Huawei and H3C use public protocols. Huawei and H3C are domestic products with better cost performance.
