According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal (The Wall Stre etJournal), Apple Music now has more users in the United States than Spotify. Although the two companies only disclose the number of global users, Apple Music paid 28 million users in the United States in February, while Spotify paid 26 million users, according to people familiar with the matter.

Globally, Apple has one more thing to do. Last time we heard that Apple had about 56 million users worldwide, Spotify currently has more than 96 million paying users worldwide.

Although Apple's music is much slower than initially thought, Apple's streaming service is still growing at a faster rate. In other words, it may be only a matter of time before Apple Music surpasses Spotify in terms of cumulative paying users.

The Journal added:

Apple Music is growing faster globally, about 2.4 to 2.8 per cent, while Spotify is growing at 2 to 2.3 per cent, according to people familiar with the matter.

With AppleMusic slowly but certainly close to Spotify's business, the Sweden-based company has begun to take some dramatic steps to attract new users and prevent current users from changing jobs. Most notably, Spotify launched a new program in March that gives advanced users free access to Hulu's advertising support layer.

While the battle for dominance of music streaming is often seen as a zero-sum game, the impressive growth shown by Spotify and AppleMusic suggests that the two streaming giants may still have room.
