(3)A computer network that has a unified network architecture and follows international standardized protocols.

An on-line system is a central mainframe computer connected to a large number of geographically dispersed terminals. As early as the early 1950s, the semi-automatic ground air defense system established by the United States was to collect information from ground radar and other measurement and control equipment to a central computer for processing through communication lines, creating an attempt to combine computer technology and communication technology. Such simple "terminal-communication-computer" systems became the rudiments of computer networks. Strictly speaking, there is a fundamental difference from later mature computer networks. Such a system, except for a central computer, the rest of the terminal equipment does not have the function of autonomous processing, and it cannot be regarded as a computer network. But now in order to distinguish it more clearly from the later development of multiple computer interconnected computer networks, it is specifically called terminal-oriented computer networks.

As the number of connected terminals increases, a Front End Processor (FEP) or Communication Control Unit (CCU) is installed between the communication line and the central computer to reduce the load of the central computer that undertakes data processing. The FEP or CCU is specially responsible for communication control with the terminals, and the division of data processing and communication control occurs, so that the data processing capability of the central computer is better utilized. In addition, in the area where the terminals are concentrated, a concentrator and a multiplexer are arranged, which first connects the nearby clustered terminals to the concentrator or multiplexer through a low-speed line, and then connects the front-end machine of the remote central computer through a high-speed communication line and a modem to form a remote on-line system, thereby improving the utilization rate of the communication line and saving the investment of the remote communication line.
