Gates spoke to David David Rubenstein, co-founder and co-CEO of Carlyle Investment Group, at an event at the Washington Economic Club (Economic Club Of Washington) on Monday.

Gates has invested in a start-up called Luminous, which works to develop chips that can be used in artificial intelligence. Microsoft itself is integrating artificial intelligence technology into its own software, while providing other companies with ways to use the technology in its products.

Microsoft has also been committed to commercializing another area, which is augmented reality (AR), and has introduced products such as HoloLens headphones. Gates now spends about 1/6 of his time on Microsoft, and he mentioned the technology in a conversation on Monday.
