Thomas S.Huang, the father of computer vision and the guru of Chinese vision, died on the night of April 25, 2020, est, at the age of 84, according to the AI Technology Review.
Mr. Thomas S.Huang, the guru of Chinese computer vision, passed away!
This is undoubtedly a great sorrow in computer vision, especially in the field of computer vision in China. In the history of computer vision in China, there are two important figures who play a key role, namely: Fu Jingsun (1930-1985) and Huang Xitao (1936-2020).
If Fu Jingsun of Purdue University, the father of pattern recognition, is the guide of pattern recognition in China, Huang Xitao, who also taught in Pudu, is the "key gentleman" of Chinese computer vision.
Huang Jingtao, born in Shanghai in 1936, went to study in the United States after graduating from National Taiwan University in 1956, obtained master's and doctoral degrees from MIT and taught in MIT. After Fu Jingsun, he is the most senior Chinese scientist in computer vision, pattern recognition, multimedia and other fields. In 1980, Huang transferred from Purdue University to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
In the early days, his research tended to information processing, and he invented the two-dimensional facsimile (document) compression method of predictive difference quantization (PDQ), which has been developed into the international G3/G4FAX compression standard; in addition, in the field of multi-dimensional digital signal processing, he proposed the theory of the stability of recursive filters.
In the middle and late 1980s, Huang Weitao's research focused on motion vision, and the representative work was the formula for estimating three-dimensional motion from two-dimensional image sequences established in the late 1980s, which opened up a new field for image processing and computer vision.
Because of his pioneering research contributions in the fields of image processing, pattern recognition and computer vision, Huang Xiantao is also known as the "father of computer vision" by the Chinese computer community.
The domestic scholars who studied or studied in Huang Mengtao's laboratory in the early 1980s were Fang Jiaqi of North China Computing Institute and Gu Weikang of Zhejiang University. What they saw and learned in Huang Guitao's laboratory opened a window for early computer vision researchers in China.
Among Huang's students, the first one to get a teaching position was Alan C. Bovic, which he codirected with David C. Munson. Alan later taught at the University of Texas at Austin and brought out dozens of doctoral students. The most famous Chinese students of Alan are the inventor of SSIM algorithm, academician of Canadian Academy of Engineering, academician of Royal Academy of Sciences and Wang Zhou of the University of Waterloo. SSIM algorithm is a classic algorithm to measure the similarity of two images and is widely used in industry.
The other two students who trained a number of students and helped "Huangmen" open branches and leaves are Weng Juyang of Michigan State University and Wu Jie of Northwestern University.
Weng Juyang, who graduated from Fudan University in 1982, was the first doctoral student recruited by Huang Guitao in China. He edited Motion and Structure from Image Sequences in 1989, and then turned to the field of "Computational Autonomous Mental Development" and Robotics. The two techniques "data enhancement" and "maximization pool" proposed by him in the Cresceptron project in 1992 have been widely used and played a positive role in the evolution of CNN.
Wu Yingze graduated from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 1994 and later studied for a doctorate under UIUC Huang Xitao. After graduation, he taught at Northwestern University and trained a number of students, including Hua Gang, former chief researcher of Microsoft Research Asia. Both Wu and Hua Gang have served as program chairmen (PC) of CVPR, the top meeting of computer vision. Wu is the PC of CVPR 2017, and Hua Gang is the PC of CVPR 2019.
It is worth mentioning that despite the growing influence of Chinese in the field of computer vision and the increasing number of Chinese serving as chairman and program chairman of CVPR in recent years, only a few Chinese held the position of CVPR PC, a reflection of academic competence, before 2017. Huang Xiaotao himself is the first Chinese to serve as chairman of the CVPR program (1992). The fourth Chinese to serve as chairman of the CVPR program (2012) is Roger Bo of the University of Rochester. Roger Bo is also a "Huangmen disciple." when he was a PhD student at New York University's Buffalo University, his mentor was his senior at the Chinese University of Science and Technology, another student of Huang Xitao, and Chen Changwen, now dean of the Polytechnic School of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen).
Apart from academia, Huang Weitao also has a number of disciples who have entered the industry, including Professor of computer Science at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Chief Scientist of Huawei Noah's Ark computer Vision Tian Qi, Lenovo Group CTO Rui Yong, Wen Yuan Zhixing CEO Han Xu, former Group Chief Scientist, artificial Intelligence Research Institute Dean, Yitu Technology Chief Technology Officer Yan Shuicheng, and Yuncong Technology founder Zhou Xi. Huang Weitao also actively promoted his descendants. Li Feifei's first teaching position came from the positive recommendation of Huang Mengtao. Ma Yi, a computer vision giant, worked with Huang Guitao at UIUC after his doctorate, and was also deeply influenced by Huang Guitao. Huang Miantao's influence on computer vision (especially Chinese computer vision) can be seen.
Since the eighties of last century, it can be said that almost every Chinese scholar who has made achievements in the field of CV has more or less been connected with Huang Guitao, and Thomas S.Huang has become a beacon in the field of Chinese vision.
The lighthouse will never go out, shining on every young man who wishes to make a difference in the era of CV navigation, braving the wind and waves and setting sail.
Mr. Huang is immortal.
