Dmitri Dolgov, chief technology officer of Waymo, told foreign media at a conference in Mountain View, California this morning that 5G technology and next-generation cellular networks will be the cornerstone of the company's self-driving fleet.

"I think these technologies will bring huge improvements in communication latency and bandwidth. Our car also relies on on-board computers to ensure safety, but 5G will be its accelerator." He said that Waymo's driverless Chrysler Pacifica uses dual-modulation demodulators to detect hazards and change driving routes.

5G technology will become the core of a large number of high-tech, including new cellular antennas, modems, wireless access nodes, carrier aggregation technology, large-scale antenna technology and quadrature amplitude modulation.

In addition, there is more than one kind of 5G. Millimeter wave refers to the ultra-high frequency electromagnetic wave with frequencies between 24GHz and 300GHz, which can steadily transmit a large amount of information in a short distance (about 1000 feet). In contrast, electromagnetic waves lower than 6GHz travel longer distances, but cover very small bandwidths.

5G technology hopes to reduce the latency from 20 to 70 milliseconds in the 4G era to less than 1 millisecond in any frequency band. The transmission speed can reach 6GB per second in the frequency band from 24GHz to 300GHz.

So what does it have to do with self-driving cars? Lower latency plays an important role in decision-making in complex road conditions because it requires more real-time network communication. The sensors on the car will collect data from 1.4TB to 19TB every hour, and the increase in bandwidth can help it meet the needs of data transmission.

"under current conditions, any delay of more than 100ms may cause traffic accidents," Dean Bushey, general manager of self-driving startup Voyage, said in a recent interview. "so we need lower latency and higher bandwidth, which is where 5G works."

Others believe that the popularity of 5G technology is still early, and Waymo's commercial ride-sharing service, Waymo One, currently operates only in Phoenix, Arizona. So the performance of 5G is worthy of our attention. It has launched early networks and devices, and by the end of this year, maybe your phone will be able to use 5G in some places.
