Core version of Intel (Intel NUC computing elements want modular laptops)

If you've heard this before, stop us: imagine buying an ultra-portable laptop or all-in-one, and one day it might be easy to replace its content with faster CPU, faster RAM, and faster SSD.

If it sounds like Intel's failed computer card imitation since 2017, it's a little bit. However, when we spoke to Intel officials in Computex in Taipei recently, they claimed that they had considered the reasons for Compute Card's failure and solved the problem.

Although the previous version was limited to the 5 W Y-level CPU, the new NUC computing element can run 15 W U-level chips. Part of the reason is the design of the NUC computing element, which uses the back as a huge radiator. Internally, you will get the eighth generation of U-level CPU, SSD, RAM and wireless modules.

One big difference from computer cards is that edge connectors are used for NUC computing elements rather than custom port styles. The computing card is designed to slide into and out of a larger chassis so that it can be upgraded as easily as possible and even become a portable computing device that can be carried around and slid into a custom base.

According to Intel, edge connectors have more functions. The original calculation card uses proprietary connectors, which can provide up to 4K single display screen, single 1080p display screen, 4 USB ports and 2 PCIe channels. With Intel NUC computing components, all modern connections in laptops are provided through pins.

To some extent, you can almost think of NUC computing elements as the kernel of a motherboard in a module that can be plugged into a slot. It is believed that Intel's new feature will enable computer manufacturers to use a single unified chassis for multiple configurations.

While consumers can technically buy modular laptops, open them and upgrade to newer modules, Intel does not believe that end-user upgrades are the purpose of NUC computing elements. Instead, it applies to smaller PC vendors. Although large computer manufacturers have the resources to quickly design tenth-generation CPU, smaller PC vendors cannot do so. NUC computing elements can help them bring new models to customers faster. So maybe this time, Intel's minicomputer has a better chance.

Huge resistance from original equipment manufacturers.

Yes, if you want to know the advantages of a technology used by large PC vendors, this technology can basically balance the competitive environment with small PC vendors, but this is not the case. In fact, Intel freely acknowledges that large OEMs may turn to Intel computing components and adopt their own custom designs.
