When you access the Internet, you have to go through a conversion process from URL to IP, which is done through the domain name server. The vast majority of Internet applications rely on this to achieve the addressing and location of network resources. Domain name root server is not only the most core system and one of the most important infrastructure of the Internet, but also related to network operation and information security.

China breaks the pattern of no root server

The domain name root server is mainly used to manage the home directory of the Internet. There are only 13 IPv4 root servers in the world. The names of these 13 IPv4 root domain name servers are "A" to "M", and one is the main root server in the United States. The remaining 12 are secondary root servers, of which 9 are in the United States, 2 in Europe, in the United Kingdom and Sweden, and 1 in Asia in Japan. On the basis of full compatibility with the existing IPv4 root server architecture, China led the "Snowman Project" to complete the installation of 25 IPv6 root servers in 16 countries around the world in 2016, in fact forming a new pattern of 13 original IPv4 roots plus 25 IPv6 roots.

In China, there are currently four servers, including one primary root server and three secondary root servers, which also broke the pattern that there were no root servers in China in the past.
