Shulou(Shulou.com)05/31 Report--
Aliyun has begun to provide its customers with a new example supported by its 128core Yitian 710 server-on-a-chip system (SoC) launched last October. Obviously, the processor designed by Alibaba's T-Head subsidiary is now ready to power Alibaba's example. But to try, companies must be invited by Alibaba, and the number of instances driven by Yitian is extremely limited.
Alibaba's T-Head Yitian 710 server SoC contains 128 Armv9 cores and runs at a frequency of 3.20 GHz. It has eight DDR5-4800 memory channels that provide up to 307.2 GBps of bandwidth to the kernel and 96 PCIe 5.0channels for connecting high-performance solid-state storage, network cards, and other devices. The Yitian integrates 60 billion transistors and is manufactured in a 5-nm manufacturing process, making it one of the most complex processors ever.
Aliyun has developed a proprietary Panjiu server for its Yitian 710. Plate wine separates computing from storage and is designed for general and accelerated AI workloads. In addition, such machines can also be used in high-performance storage applications.
Since both Yitian 710 and Panjiu are designed for Alibaba's cloud service, the company is now offering its elastic computing service (ECS) instance type called G8m to customers to test them, according to The Register. In particular, users can preview their work using the ecs.g8m.xlarge virtual machine, a server with four vCPU (cores) running 2.75 GHz, 16 GB of memory, and 3 Gbps of network bandwidth, which can be accelerated to 10 Gbitps load and capacity permissible under heavy load.
For some reason, Alibaba only provides 100 instances to select customers and will serve the order on a first-come-first-served basis. With only 100 quad-core instances provided, we assume that the number of servers on which Alibaba runs its Yitian 710 server SoC is very limited. In addition, the processors used for these servers probably do not have all 128 cores enabled.
Alibaba did not disclose any information about the performance provided by his instance or when the trial will end. It also did not say when the Yitian 710 processor and Panjiu server would be available to a wider audience.
However, although the availability of machines based on the Yitian 710 is so low that not everyone can try it yet, Aliyun is clearly serious about developing its own server-level SoC for its own cloud services. The main question is how competitive these processors are, and whether they can really replace the AMD and Intel CPU used by cloud giants today.
