The difference between Azure Backup and Azure Site Recovery

There are two main backup scenarios on Azure, Azure backup (Azure Buckup) and Azure Site Recovery, but there are some typical differences between the two:

Both services provide different but complementary functions.

Azure Site Recovery:Site Recovery provides disaster recovery solutions for local computers and Azure VM. You can copy the computer from the primary location to the secondary location. In the event of a disaster, you can fail over the computer to the secondary location and access them from the secondary location. When everything is back to normal, you can perform a failure reply to the computer and restore them at the main site.

Azure backup: the Azure backup service can back up data from the local computer and Azure VM. Data can be backed up and restored at a granularity level, including backup of files, folders, and computer system state, as well as application-aware data backup. Azure backups process data at a finer level of granularity than Site Recovery. For example, if a presentation on a laptop is corrupted, you can use Azure backup to restore the presentation. To ensure the security and accessibility of VM configuration and data, you can use Site Recovery.

This article focuses on Azure backup, and the content of Azure Site Recovery is described in other chapters.

Azure Backup supports several concepts and terms related to backing up the local computer and Azure VM backup

MARS:

Microsoft Azure Backup Server .

For more information about MARS, please refer to Microsoft's official website: https://docs.microsoft.com/zh-cn/azure/backup/backup-azure-microsoft-azure-backup

DPM:

Data Protection Manager . DPM backs up files and application data. DPM is deployed on physical machines or local virtual machines. DPM can back up data to Azure Backup Valult.

For more information about DPM, please refer to Microsoft's official website: https://docs.microsoft.com/zh-cn/system-center/dpm/dpm-overview?view=sc-dpm-2019

Azure recovery Service (MARS) Agent:

Azure Recovery Services (MARS) agent, which is an agent, can be downloaded from the download Azure Backup console.

DPM or MABS protection agent:

The DPM or MABS protection agent

Backup server (Backup Server):

Usually refers to the local System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) or Azure backup server (Azure Backup Server (MABS))

Back up the local computer

1) run the Azure backup Century Interconnection Azure recovery Service (MARS) agent on the local Windows computer to back up individual files and system state.

2) back up the local computer to a backup server (System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) or Century Internet Azure backup Server (MABS)), and then configure the backup server to back up to the Azure backup and recovery service vault in Azure.

Backup Azure VM

1) enable backup for a single Azure VM. When backup is enabled, Azure backup installs an extension in the Azure VM agent running on VM. The agent backs up the entire VM.

2) run the MARS agent on Azure VM. This feature is useful for backing up individual files and folders on the VM.

3) back up Azure VM to a DPM server or MABS running in Azure. Then use Azure backup to back up the DPM server / MABS to the vault.

SQL Server backup

If you need to back up the SQL Server workload, you can use other options. Azure backup can install the workload backup extension on the SQL Server instance on Windows to support the following options:

Full: back up the entire database and filegroup. It also contains enough logs to perform the restore. The transaction log holds the latest additions or deletions recorded in the database. To perform the latest restore of the database, use the latest transaction log.

Difference: based on the last full backup, only blocks that have changed since the last full backup are captured.

Transaction log: allows a point-in-time restore of the database.

SQL Server on Linux is not currently integrated with Azure backup.

Case 1: backup Azure VM from Azure Backup

Create a recovery service vault (Revovery Services Vaults)

Note that if you want to back up the Azure VM of which region, you need at least one Recovery Services Vault under that area.

Select Azure VM from the recovery service vault for backup

Click the backup button

Select Azure, virtual machine, and click the backup button.

Note that in addition to Azure, three types of local and Azrue Stack are supported:

For Azure, you have the following options:

For the local computer, you can choose from the following:

For Azure Stack, you have the following options:

Select or create a new backup policy

Select the virtual machine to be backed up

Note: only virtual machines in the same region can be selected

Case 2: launch Azure Backup from Azure VM to select an existing or new recovery service vault (Revovery Services Vaults) for Azure VM

Case 3 uses the Azure recovery Service (MARS) agent to back up Azure VM files

Download MARS Agent and credentials

Create a new backup, select local, files and folders, and download MARS agents and credentials.

Install the MARS agent in Azure VM and configure

Download two files and double-click exe to follow the prompts for the next step of installation.

Select the second file you downloaded

Set the password used to encrypt

Configure scheduled backup

Add items to back up

Set backup frequency

Set retention policy

View backup history

Case 4 restore Azure VM

Find the backed up items in the recovery service vault-backup items-AzureVM

Perform a restore operation

Case 5 restore files and folders

In the Microsoft Azure Backup program, click recover data

Select a server

Select recovery model

Select date

Browse for files

View backed up files
