A small wearable headset called AlterEgo can detect subtle electrical stimuli sent from the brain to oral muscles so that people can send commands to digital assistants without saying a word.

According to Digital Trends, this is not mental reading, but devices still under development can help users silently control their smart homes, translate foreign languages or overcome language barriers. If AlterEgo enters the market, it could revolutionize the way we interact with technology and others.

Arnav Kapur, a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who developed the device, told Digital Trends that he envisioned a future in which his device could be used to help people with neurological diseases better control the world.

The wearer can use it as a cautious communication device or memory aid, silently prompting AlterEgo to speak or provide information for them.
