Select an installation method

Install or upgrade

You should first determine whether you are doing a new installation of Fedora Core 4 or an upgrade. If you are upgrading an existing Red Hat Linux or Fedora system to the * * version, the installation of Fedora Core 4 will keep your data files and configuration files as complete as possible. This type of installation will take more time than a brand new installation. Usually a new installation will simply delete all data on the Linux partition (or the entire hard drive). Although you can upgrade from previous versions of Fedora or Red Hat Linux systems (for example, Red Hat Linux 8 or 9) to Fedora Core 4, you cannot upgrade from Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems to Fedora Core 4. If you choose to upgrade, you can save some time and hard disk space by removing unwanted packages. The upgrade process ignores packages that are not installed and does not upgrade them.

Install from DVD/CD, network, or hard drive

When you install Fedora, the distribution doesn't have to come from installing DVD or CD. After booting with DVD or CD and then typing linux askmethod at the boot prompt, it gives you the option to install Fedora from the following locations. Local DVD or CDROM- this is the most common way to install Fedora, which can be installed by simply typing enter at the install boot prompt. All packages required to complete the installation are on the DVD or from the 4 installation CD sets of the Fedora project.

HTTP- lets you install (http://) from a Web page.

FTP- lets you start the installation (ftp://) from a FTP site.

NFS image-allows you to install from a shared folder on any computer on the network that has Network File system (NFS) functionality. Hard disk-if you can put a copy of the Fedora Core distribution on your hard drive, you can install it from here. (assume that the hard disk partition where the distribution is located is not the partition on which you installed the system. )

If you don't have a bootable DVD or CD drive, there are other ways to start installing Fedora Core 4. Unlike previous Fedora or Red Hat Linux versions, Fedora Core 4 does not support floppy boot images (the kernel of Linux2.6 is too large to hold a floppy disk). Therefore, if you do not have a bootable DVD or CD drive, you need to start the installation process from another media. (for example, a USB device, PXE server, or hard drive, which will be described later in this chapter. )

The following special installation types will also interest you:

Boot CD- you can copy from DVD's image directory and burn boot.iso to CD to create a boot CD. If you have a DVD drive that does not boot, or if you have any media with Fedora Core 4 software described in the linux askmethod section, you can use this created CD to start the installation process. USB or other bootable media-if you can configure your computer to boot from an optional boot media, such as a USB drive, which is usually larger than a floppy disk, you can copy diskboot.img to that media and install it from there. This image is contained in the images directory of DVD. Kickstart installation-create an answer set corresponding to the questions raised by Fedora during installation. If you install Fedora Core 4 on many computers with a similar configuration, this will be a good way to save time. The Fedora project does not provide a special installation guide.
