The new iPhone will introduce a "SmartCam" feature, which allows the camera to automatically adjust settings according to the scene the camera is facing.
Tencent Digital News (Jiahe) There are some news leaks about iOS 11, and the latest news tells us that the iPhone camera will become smarter and smarter.
Some people like to "mine code," and last week Apple surprised them with what appeared to be an internal version of iOS 11.0.2 that was meant to be used on HomePod beta devices and ended up being accessed by external developers.
In the code, someone discovered that the HomePod smart slightly had some unknown secrets, and soon the message was obscured by heavier messages about the upcoming iPhone 8. For example, the code tells us something about the graphics of the new iPhone, something about biometric security technology, and how Apple will install infrared cameras.
Apple eventually removed the firmware, after all, it was leaked because of errors, but the genie has escaped from the bottle. Since then, developers have continued to dig deeper into the original system and found some information about the iPhone camera.
Developer Guilherme Rambo discovered the so-called "SmartCam" feature, found in HomePod firmware, which apparently has to do with photography technology rather than Siri streaming media slightly. According to the introduction,"SmartCam" allows the camera to adjust its settings automatically, depending on the scene the camera is facing. For example, it can be adjusted according to sunlight, snow, but also according to more specific scenes, such as pets, children, documents can be adjusted accordingly.
Apple has used machine learning on SmartCam, although this isn't the first time Apple has used machine learning on photography. For example, the Photos App has a feature that uses machine learning to identify what's in each frame after you've taken a photo, so you can find people or other things (like cats, landmarks) in the image and display them as search results. All processing is done on the device, not uploading content to the cloud, as competing systems do.
Detecting scene types is not a new technique, but it is mostly used in standalone cameras. Most point-and-shoot cameras have an "Auto" mode that determines the best combination of settings depending on the environment the camera is facing, although the final result may vary. Smartphones are crushing dedicated cameras at a very fast rate, and adding smarter auto modes to the iPhone will undoubtedly make it more powerful and practical.
Whether all camera devices installed with iOS 11 will support SmartCam is not clear at this time. It is estimated that Apple will upgrade the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6S and previous generations of mobile phones by the end of the year, but only the new iPhone may have a smarter camera, that is, iPhone 8, iPhone 7S, iPhone 7S Plus.
