In less than a week after I provided patches for the HTTP Server project, I was chosen as a submitter for Apache. What a surprise! The bigger surprise is the attitude of Apache, especially the infrastructure team: join if you want to do something, just do it (with minimal regulation).

I had an idea of designing a comment system for HTTPd documents, so I politely asked me if I could do it. At the time, I thought the answer I got would be a bureaucratic refusal, and they would explain that they didn't know me (so why did they give me their hardware? ).

The reply is simple: "go ahead, here is a FreeBSD jail (an operating system layer virtualization technology that works in the FreeBSD operating system. With this technology, FreeBSD system managers can create several small software systems, which are called prison 'jails') for you to use."

Although I was a little scared at the time, I was excited by the idea that you could do things without taking the time to gain trust, commandeer things, get censorship before implementation, etc.: I could crack something, and I had a machine to experiment with. No strings attached!

The idea that you were born to be trusted has re-emerged. It doesn't matter that I haven't worked with the infrastructure team before. I have an idea to solve the problem, which is the most important thing for them. Welcome to the team!

So I wrote a comment system for our documentation. It was implemented in subsequent documentation, and people on other projects saw it and said, "can we use it, too?" .

Soon after, I went deep into the infrastructure business and found that Apache is not only a HTTP Server. It is a series of interrelated projects, all of which share the same idea: to solve problems together and to make the world a better place by advancing computer science.
