Why will use bspwm to do my Linux window manager, for this problem, this article details the corresponding analysis and solution, hoping to help more small partners who want to solve this problem find a simpler and easier way.
Install, configure, and start using bspwm window manager on Fedora Linux.
Some people like to rearrange furniture. There are also people who like to try new shoes or regularly redecorate their bedroom. I tried the Linux desktop.
After drooling over some of the incredible desktop environments I've seen online, I'm particularly curious about one window manager: bspwm.
bspwm desktop
I've liked i3 window manager for a while now, and I love the way it's laid out and how easy it is to get started. But something about bspwm appealed to me. There are several reasons why I decided to try it:
It is_just_a window manager (WM).
It is managed by several easy-to-configure scripts.
It supports gaps between windows by default.
Probably the first reason that needs to be pointed out most is that it is just a window manager. As with the i3, there are no graphical glitches by default. You can certainly customize it however you want, but it takes effort to make it look like you want. That's part of what attracted me to it.
Although it can be used on many distributions, in my case Fedora Linux.
Install bspwm
Bspwm comes packaged in most common distributions, so you can install it using your system's package manager. The following command also installs sxkhd, an X window system daemon that "reacts to input events by executing commands," and dmenu, a generic X window menu:
dnf install bspwm sxkhd dmenu
Because bspwm is just a window manager, there are no built-in shortcuts or keyboard commands. This is also the difference between it and software such as i3. So, before you launch Window Manager for the first time, configure sxkhd:
systemctl start sxkhdsystemctl enable sxkhd
This will enable sxkhd at login, but you'll also need to configure some basic features:
curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/baskerville/bspwm/master/examples/sxhkdrc --output ~/.config/sxkhd/sxkhdrc
Before you dive deeper, take a look at this file, as some scripts call commands that may not exist on your system. A good example is the super + Return shortcut for calling urxvt. Change it to your preferred terminal, especially if you don't have urxvt installed:
## wm independent hotkeys# # terminal emulatorsuper + Return urxvt # program launchersuper + @space dmenu_run
If you are using GDM, LightDM, or another Display Manager (DM), simply select bspwm before logging in.
Configure bspwm
When you log in, you'll see nothing on the screen. It's not the emptiness you feel. It's infinite possibilities! You can now start fiddling with all parts of the desktop environment. You can now start tinkering with all the parts of your desktop environment that you took for granted over the years. Building from scratch isn't easy, but once you get the hang of it, it's incredibly rewarding.
The hardest part of any window manager is mastering shortcut keys. You start slow, but in a short time you can move around the system using only the keyboard, looking like the ultimate hacker in front of your friends and family.
You can customize the system to your liking by editing ~/.config/bspwm/bspwmrc, adding apps at startup, setting the desktop and display, and setting rules for how your windows should behave. There are some examples of default settings to get you started. Keyboard shortcuts are managed by the sxkhdrc file.
There are many more open source projects that can be installed to make your PC look better, such as Feh for desktop backgrounds, Polybar for status bars, Rofi for app launchers, and Compton to give you shadows and transparency to make your PC look new.
About why will use bspwm to do my Linux window manager problem answer to share here, hope the above content can have some help to everyone, if you still have a lot of doubts not solved, you can pay attention to the industry information channel to learn more related knowledge.
