SCCM 2016 configuration Management Series (Part 5-8)

Windows Server 2016 roles and features are configured on the Configuration Manager master server (CM16), and Windows ADK 1709 components are downloaded and installed. Next, SQL Server 2017 CU5 is installed and the WSUS role is added.

The role uses SQL to store SUSDB instead of Windows Internal Database (WID)

In the next series, we will download and extract the ConfigMgr image, download the ConfigMgr prerequisites, and then extend the Active Directory schema in the installation of System Center Configuration Manager (current branch) version 1802.

Step 1. Download and unzip the ConfigMgr image

Before installing System Center Configuration Manager version 1802, you need to download the content because it is the base version. You can download the baseline version of ConfigMgr media from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) site for use in production, or from MSDN (or the Microsoft evaluation site).

After downloading ISO, install it using Windows File Explorer and copy the contents to a useful location on the Configuration Manager server, such as C:\ Source\ SCCM1802.

Step 2. Download ConfigMgr prerequisites

Note: do the following as a local administrator on the Configuration Manager server (CM16)

You can download prerequisites during ConfigMgr setup or in advance. Since you may want to install multiple copies of ConfigMgr (one for testing and one for production), you can download the prerequisites in advance.

To do this, open the manage PowerShell command prompt and navigate to the following folder:

C:\ Source\ SCCM1802\ smssetup\ bin\ X64

Run the following line

. \ SetupDL.exe C:\ Source\ SCCM_Prerequisites

After completing this procedure, you can use CMTrace (or notepad) to open C:\ ConfigMgrSetup.log to verify the status of the download.

Note: you can find the CMTrace executable in the SMSSetup Tools folder where you unzipped the ConfigMgr media, for example: C:\ Source\ SCCM1802\ SMSSETUP\ TOOLS.

Step 3. Extended architecture

Note: do the following as an administrator on the domain controller server (AD01). If you have previously extended the Active Directory schema for Configuration Manager, you do not need to extend it.

To do this, on the Active Directory domain controller (AD01), open Windows File Explorer and browse to the network path of the ConfigMgr server with the replicated SCCM source, for example:

\\ cm01\ c$\ Source\ SCCM1802\ SMSSETUP\ BIN\ X64

In this folder, locate the extadsch.exe and right-click, and select run as Administrator.

After extending the schema for SCCM, you can open C:\ ExtAdsch.log on the root directory of C:\ on the server where you are performing this operation, and see whether the operation succeeds or fails.
