The binding source acts as an intermediary between the user interface control and the VS Web service. As we will discuss later, although controls can be bound directly to DataSet, it is usually more convenient to use specialized binding source objects, and data-bound controls provide a user interface element that allows users to read or write data. Data binding is possible using some built-in elements in Visual Studio Tools for Office,Word and Excel documents, such as Word bookmarks and Excel areas. Windows forms controls can also be added to Word documents or Excel spreadsheets, as well as data binding.

In a Visual Studio Tools for Office project, the back-end data source is represented by the connection string passed to the adapter; all other content is represented by members of the custom host item (workbook or document) class.
