How to maximize the virtual memory performance of the windows system, many novices are not very clear about this, in order to help you solve this problem, the following editor will explain in detail, people with this need can come to learn, I hope you can gain something.
Now that we have entered the era of large memory, how to set up virtual memory to maximize performance improvement? Master Dong will discuss this issue in this issue.
Does disabling virtual memory improve system performance?
In the era of small memory, the necessity of setting up virtual memory is clear to everyone. Now the price of memory is getting cheaper and cheaper, many friends have used the memory of 1GB. In a large memory environment, can virtual memory be completely disabled to improve system performance?
To understand this problem, you first need to understand what virtual memory is and what it does. In the early days, because memory was very expensive, there was not too much configuration on computers. At this point, if the amount of memory required by the operating system and applications exceeds the amount of physical memory installed in the computer, the operating system temporarily writes the data that does not need to be accessed to a special file on the hard disk through an operation called "paging", thus freeing memory for programs and data that need to use memory immediately. This special file on the hard disk is the paging file (that is, the virtual memory file, or swap file, and the paging file in Windows 2000/XP/2003 is called pagefile.sys).
The speed of hard disk and memory is very different, so some friends think that under the condition of large memory, virtual memory can be disabled, so that the system does not need to take the time to page the data in memory to the hard disk, so as to improve the running efficiency of the system.
However, according to the traditional design, many core functions of Windows require the use of paging files. If you disable all paging files, some third-party applications may encounter errors that run out of memory. In fact, Windows does not use paging files when it is not needed, so adjusting the system in this way will not achieve any performance improvement.
It is the most reasonable to set it to 1.5 times the physical memory.
It seems that the setting of virtual memory is necessary. When setting up virtual memory, it is generally recommended that the virtual memory be set to 1.5 to 2 times the physical memory capacity (the minimum and maximum values, respectively). Is this setting reasonable?
Before discussing this issue, let's first look at two situations: there are two computers with the same configuration except for memory. Computer A has 128MB memory, computer B has 1GB memory, and both computers run the Windows XP operating system.
According to the method set in this view, the virtual memory of computer A will be set to 192MB~256MB, and the virtual memory of computer B will be set to 1.5GB~2GB. In practice, computer An is likely to run out of virtual memory when running large software or games, while computer B may waste hard disk space because of setting such a large paging file.
How to determine a reasonable virtual memory size?
In this way, the so-called 1.5 times can only be a guiding opinion, and how big should it be set depends on the actual application of the system?
Indeed, it is scientific to set up virtual memory on demand. We can use the performance monitor in Windows 2000/XP/2003 to determine whether the size of virtual memory is reasonable.
Enter "perfmon.msc" in "run", expand "performance Log and Alerts" on the left, double-click "counter Log", right-click in the blank on the right, select New Log Settings, name it Page File, enter to confirm, and the window shown in figure 1 will appear.
Figure 1
Click the "add counter" button, select Paging File from the "performance object" drop-down menu in the pop-up window, select "% Usage Peak" in "Select counter from the list", select "_ Total" in the example, click the "add" button, and finally close the window.
Click the OK button in figure 1, and click Yes to create the log file. Then open the Log Files tab, select text Files (comma delimited) from the log file type drop-down menu, and remember the path to the log file shown in the for example box.
After clicking "OK", the counter is already running, and you can do your daily operations on your computer and open and close as many frequently used applications and games as possible. After a few hours of use, the counter can basically make a complete assessment of your use.
