POP3

POP3 is the abbreviation of Post Office Protocol 3, the third version of the Post Office Protocol, which specifies how to connect a personal computer to Internet's mail server and the electronic protocol for downloading email. It is the first offline protocol standard for Internet e-mail. POP3 allows users to store mail from the server to the local host (that is, their own computer) and delete the mail stored on the mail server, while the POP3 server is a receiving mail server that follows the POP3 protocol and is used to receive e-mail.

SMTP

The full name of SMTP is "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol", or simple Mail transfer Protocol. It is a set of specifications for transferring messages from the source address to the destination address, through which it controls the way messages are transferred. The SMTP protocol belongs to the TCP/IP protocol suite, which helps each computer find the next destination when sending or transferring a letter. A SMTP server is a mail sending server that follows the SMTP protocol.

SMTP authentication, in short, requires that you must provide an account name and password before you can log on to the SMTP server, which makes it impossible for spammers to take advantage of it.

The purpose of adding SMTP authentication is to protect users from spam.

IMAP

IMAP, whose full name is Internet Mail Access Protocol, is the Interactive Mail access Protocol, which is one of the standard protocols similar to POP3. The difference is that when IMAP is enabled, the emails you receive from the email client will still be retained on the server, and the actions on the client will be fed back to the server, such as deleting emails, marking read, etc., and the emails on the server will also take corresponding actions. So whether you log in to the mailbox from the browser or from the client software, you will see the same email and status.
