Overview and configuration of WDS Services

The full name of WDS is Windows deployment Service, which is mainly used in the batch deployment of computer operating systems in large and medium-sized networks. Greatly speed up the deployment of the operating system by using WDS to manage images and unattended installation scripts.

The main advantages of using WDS are:

* reduce the cost of difficult deployment and inefficient manual installation

* allow network-based installation of Windows operating system

* you can install the operating system on a computer that does not have an operating system installed.

How WDS works

1. During the startup process, the client gets the IP address configuration information through the DHCP server.

two。 The client finds the WDS server via broadcast or DHCP, tries to connect to it, and launches a specific boot image, which is Win PE.

3. The client begins to install the operating system image on the WDS server, completing all installation work.

Note: if you want to ensure that WDS completes the automatic distribution of the system, at least the following components must be installed properly.

1. DNS: domain name resolution service, mainly used to find domain controllers and name resolution services

2. DHCP: dynamic host configuration protocol, mainly used to assign IP addresses to clients that need to install an operating system

3. AD service: active directory service, mainly used for user authentication

Environment in which WDS is installed

1. It is recommended to use a professional server as the distribution end of the WDS service.

two。 Clients try to choose products of the same model from the same manufacturer, and the network card supports PXE function.

3. The WDS server must be an active directory member server or domain controller

4. WDS servers need NTFS file system volumes to store images. It is recommended to put them in non-system partitions.

5. The user deploying WDS must have a member of the local Administrators group, and to initialize the server, must also be a member of the Domain Users group

6. Gigabit network is recommended.

Install the WDS service

The following describes how to install the operating system in bulk using Windows 2008 R2

1. Install and deploy AD, DHCP and DNS services on the WDS server. I have described the principle and configuration in detail on previous blogs, so I will not repeat the demonstration. After deployment, as shown in the figure

4. Select "deploy Server" and "Transport Server" next step

5. Confirm, install and complete the installation of WDS

After installation, the effect of distribution can not be achieved, and the WDS service needs to be configured accordingly.

Configure the WDS service

1. Open the Windows deployment service

two。 Right-click "configure Server" to enter the WDS Server configuration Wizard

3. Specify the path to the remote installation folder

4. Check both "do not listen on the port" and "DHCP option"

5. Select respond to all client computers

Uncheck the "add a mirror to the server now" and click "finish" to complete the configuration of the basic WDS service.

6. Right-click "installation Image" and select "add installation Image"

7. Specify the location of the image file (the specific path is determined according to the actual environment)

8. Complete the image import of Install.win according to the wizard

9. After you complete the import, you can view the image file

10. Right-click "Boot Image" and select "add Boot Image"

11. Follow the prompted steps to complete, in the same way as importing the installation image

Start the client

1. After the computer starts up, you first need to adjust it in BIOS, make sure that the startup mode is booted by the network card, and press the prompt "F2" to enter the network service boot mode.

two。 After entering, you can see that the client is trying to load the boot file from the server at address 10.0.0.1

3. After loading successfully, enter the user name and password with permission

4. Select the version of the operating system to install

5. The client begins to install the system, and the process requires entering relevant information until the installation is complete
