In the new version, the bare metal management service Ironic adds an automated bare metal hardware configuration feature to make it easier to operate when adding bare metal. In addition, Ironic also adds support for multi-tenancy and authentication. Moreover, Ironic does not have to be used within the OpenStack framework, it can be used independently for other projects, for example, you can let Kubernetes directly call Ironic to manage bare metal.

Secondly, the updates on bypass security and encryption mainly involve three projects: Octavia, Kolla and Neutron.

Load balancer project Octavia added support for TLS secure network transport protocol, so that the load balancer service can enforce security compliance.

Kolla is an OpenStack containerized deployment tool. In the new version, Kolla adds internal encryption support for TLS for the first time, so that TLS encryption is automatically added to the communication between containerized applications and OpenStack services.

Stateless security group (stateless security groups) support is added to Neutron. The traditional Neutron network security tracking management is stateful, which will take up a lot of resources when recording network data, and there will be a certain loss of efficiency. Neutron's stateless security group does not record data or information about each state, making the use of resources more useful.

Third, expand versatility to support emerging use cases to support more new workloads.

In the new version, Cyborg (Accelerator Lifecycle Management) is integrated with Nova (Computing Services). Cyborg can already manage GPU or FPGA hardware accelerators, push upgrade codes directly to FPGA, and configure workloads for accelerators. This feature is a bright spot and is critical to the implementation of an intelligent open source infrastructure.

In the new version, the Octavia load balancing service can be deployed in edge environments. A large number of emerging use case requirements have also been generated in the field of edge computing, and Octavia can better serve the edge computing environment.

The OpenStack community is working on integrating OpenStack and Kubernetes,Magnum to make it easier for users to install and run Kubernetes in OpenStack, upgrade installed Kubernetes, and upgrade the operating system running on Kubernetes clusters. According to Li Haoyang, China Community Manager of the OpenStack Foundation, CERN, an European nuclear research organization, is a heavy user of Magnum, using Magnum to manage 500 Kubernetes clusters.

Just like Nova can manage virtual machines, Zun can perform container images on OpenStack. Zun is suitable for scenarios where you only need to run a single docker image. In the new version, Zun component adds support for Kubernetes container runtime and Kubernetes Pod. Users can use Kuberntetes to execute processes in Zun, or you can use Zun to create Kubernetes pods in Kata Containers to improve security and isolation performance.
