Samsung Galaxy S22 series cannot use eSIM on Google Fi on February 25th

Samsung has been providing eSIM support on its phones for years, but American models have always been excluded. The Galaxy S22 series has finally changed that by connecting to cellular networks in the United States without the need for a physical SIM card. However, at least one operator that supports eSIM seems to be excluded: Google Fi.

9to5Google reported that even if Fi supports eSIM on other phones, it is not possible to use eSIM to set up Google Fi on the Galaxy S22 series. Google Fi can be activated with eSIM on iPhone SE (version 2020), XR, XS, XS Max, 11, 12 and 13 series, as well as all the latest Pixel phones (Pixel 2 and later) and other Android devices. Google Fi also sells the Galaxy S22 series through its online store.

It is not clear whether the problem lies with Samsung, or whether Google needs to update its Google Fi app, which is used to configure eSIM, to add support. Either way, if you want to purchase Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22 Plus, or Galaxy S22 Ultra, you will need to obtain a physical SIM card for Google Fi services-at least for now.

A "product expert" who assisted with Google support requests on Reddit claimed that eSIM support for the Galaxy S22 series "will play a role in future operating system updates", but it is not clear whether the information is based on speculation or comes from Google. Google Fi's official Twitter account said in January, "We don't have a timetable for new phones to support eSIM."

ESIM allows you to activate network coverage without a physical SIM card, speeding up your setup of mobile phone services (no longer waiting for cards in the mail) and enabling fast carrier switching. In some cases, physical SIM cards are still convenient, but extended eSIM support will certainly help.
