"artificial intelligence in healthcare is increasingly used in medical devices and other types of technologies and therapies," Linda Malik, a partner at Moses & Singer and chair of the firm's healthcare and privacy and cyber security practice group, told HealthITSecurity.

"it is used in a variety of applications, such as diabetes monitoring, radiology to identify different types of pathology and chest X-rays, and to identify the mental health environment of depression."

Recent research has also shown that artificial intelligence may be able to narrow the gap and reduce risk in the area of health care cyber security. According to a report by the Economist Intelligence Unit, artificial intelligence in cyber security is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23.66 per cent from 2020 to 2027.

For all its benefits, the pace of development of artificial intelligence technology can be said to be beyond the reach of regulators. AI providers in healthcare must figure out how to govern Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines, and HIPAA compliance in the case of business partners.

At the same time, when it comes to artificial intelligence, security and patient privacy remain the top considerations in the health care industry.

"there are many ways in which artificial intelligence is particularly useful in a healthcare environment. But there are a lot of problems with how we regulate AI, especially because AI relies heavily on collecting large amounts of data to learn," Malek explained.
