Google has entered the midrange smartphone market-a decision almost as smart as the artificial intelligence technology in its new devices. We were impressed by the initial Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL devices. They introduced smart and software-enhanced hardware, but now they have added a new version at a lower price.

Pixel 3a is Google's new flagship mid-range phone and Pixel 3a XL's little cousin. Both new devices are equipped with mid-range components, but retain Google's smart software enhancements to allow its new competitors in this market to truly realize their own interests.

Google Pixel 3a: design.

Google has made a lot of changes under the engine of these new devices, but one thing is still design. Google clearly maintains the same look and feel of Pixel 3a and Pixel 3. The two-color design returns, the circular fingerprint sensor is in the same position, and you can still see all the colors on the lock button except Just Black.

There may be a smaller version of the existing phone, but the screen has not changed. A significant difference that many people will welcome is the addition of a 3.5mm headphone Jack to the top of the phone, so users can now listen to music or podcasts while charging the phone, which runs counter to Apple's unpopular standard for iPhone 7.

The Pixel 3a comes in three colors: Just Black, Clearly White and a new product specifically designed for the Pixel 3a series, called Purple-ish. The latter is light purple and soft, and the lock has an obviously pleasing green, creating a refreshing TINT, which has won our recognition.

Google Pixel 3a: display.

The Pixel 3a's 2220 x 1080 OLED screen is amazing, especially its price. The 5.6-inch screen size is 0.1 inch taller than its previous height, providing good image quality and can beat other similar products. The pixel per inch of the 441ppi also far exceeds that of the Pixel 3a XL.

Google warned us in the preview that the hardware is definitely not a top specification because it is not specifically designed for top phones. However, you will not know from the performance test of the monitor. The screen color accuracy is excellent, covering 95.6% of the sRGB color gamut in the "natural" color setting of the phone, of which the color is the most accurate.

The team also scored high in terms of brightness and contrast. We measured the admirable peak brightness of 416cd/m2 and infinite: 1 contrast, which helps highlight those black inks. The display on the latest phone will be slightly better. If the monitor is really important to you when choosing a smartphone, Pixel 3a may make you feel a little short-lived. All I know is that you will pay extra for the gorgeous Galaxy S10 or Huawei P30 display.

Google Pixel 3a: specifications and performance.

Pixel 3a is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 with 4GB memory. This is lower than the 845 used in expensive models, but in terms of overall perception of device performance, there is no significant performance degradation in normal daily activities. There is no significant lag in application loading and switching, which is a smooth and pleasant experience. As the name suggests, Pixel 3a will not be as powerful as Pixel 3 and its competitors, but to be honest, we will be surprised if you notice big differences in daily use.

There is only one storage option, 64GB-no ifs, no buts. Perhaps to expand Google's cloud disk users, Pixel 3a will not benefit from a more expensive 128GB version and no optional SD card slot for storage expansion.

Poor battery life is one of our biggest complaints about Pixel 3, but I'm glad it's been resolved here. In our tests, the 3000 Ma battery and the less demanding processor lasted 15 hours and 7 minutes, which was about two and a half hours compared to the full-fat Pixel 3. It goes on comfortably all day, and should be the same as you.

In terms of charging, it's a pity that the Pixel 3a lost the wireless charging feature touted by its more expensive siblings, but the USB-C charger recharges your phone in an hour or so, and Google claims to bring you seven uses in just 15 minutes.

If you like good comparisons, you will no doubt wonder how it compares to other phones in the same category and the previous Pixel 3. As we have said, the components of Pixel 3a are weaker than Pixel 3, and the difference has not really been noticed by the naked eye. Our benchmark test shows the gap in the classroom.

With the help of cross-platform processor Geekbench, we tested mobile phones with single-core and multi-core parameters. Pixel 3a scored 1619 and 5146 respectively, while Pixel 3 scored 2430 and 8007 mi-in this case, the higher the score, the better the performance.

In terms of how to compete with our competitors, we chose Galaxy S7 Edge and Honor 20 Lite as two competitors in terms of performance-to-price ratio. Compared with the two, the score of Pixel 3a was slightly higher than that of Honor 20 Lite and slightly lower than that of S7 Edge--. Although the Pixel 3a may be more expensive, it does have a more expensive one.

If security is your top priority, you will be pleased to know that Pixel 3a is equipped with a Titan M chip embedded in your phone, which is by far the most secure form of multi-factor authentication for Google. Your phone will act as a physical security key, not an 2FA text-part of a program first announced by Google Cloud Next in 2019-designed to reduce the risk of phishing, an attack that has greatly increased in popularity and complexity in recent years.

Most mobile phone manufacturers have now realized the importance of limiting screen time, during which everyone is glued to one screen or another. From the return function of Pixel 3, Google's digital benefits dashboard allows you to limit the amount of time you spend on a particular application, monitor general screen time, and pause notifications in given situations, such as when your phone's screen is facing down.

Google Pixel 3a: camera

It would be a pity to see Pixel 3's incredible camera put into use for cheaper models, but fortunately, this is not the case. Pixel's camera technology has become more intelligent in the latest equipment. There is nothing special about the hardware, but the AI driver software that powers the camera and all its bundled modes and functions is noteworthy.

Compared with the Pixel 3, the camera is not much different, which is a good thing. The back is still a 12.2MP (there is a 8 million pixel lens in front for a selfie) to take the most beautiful picture you can see on your smartphone at this price.

Portrait mode is our outstanding feature. For the previous generation of Pixel phones-and devices from other manufacturers-it uses AI to detect the body of the lens, so the background can be blurred for an impressive depth of field. This mode also allows you to take two photos, one photo and the other without depth of field effect, so you can decide which photo you like best.

Another regression feature of Pixel 3 is Night Sight, another AI-driven feature that claims to capture images with rich details and colors even in the dark, all without a flash. However, we found this feature very popular. When it works, it works well, and the theme of the lens is indeed very detailed and colored, but in some cases it has almost no obvious effect.

Elsewhere, the rear camera has a variety of video modes, from 720p to 240fps to 4K to 30fps. It has a 76-degree field of view and f / 1.8 aperture, while the front camera has a larger 84-degree field of view and f / 2.0 aperture, which can record 1080p video up to 30fps.

Super Res Zoom has added an enviable list of camera features that can reasonably interpret details such as words from a moderate distance. This is by no means the incredible 50-fold zoom level of Huawei's P30 Pro camera, but it's still good under 400 pounds.

Google Lens also paid off. The feature, first introduced in a preview version of Pixel customers last year, allows you to point your phone to an object and use Google search to identify and display search results. It works in real time and is very accurate. It can identify the trainer's brand and series, and complement consumer electronics products. The object you want to scan should have a contrast background, because having a similar background will reduce the accuracy of detection.

Google Pixel 3a: judgment

Considering the price, the Pixel 3a is an incredibly impressive phone. Google has managed to keep everything that makes the original Pixel 3 great. The trademark of the Pixel camera is still a loyal brand, and its returns are smarter than ever, without compromising performance or usability. In fact, it even manages to address our main complaints by improving battery life.

This is a good move from Google to the mid-market, and it will shine among its new competitors. Although Nokia and Motorola were once royals in the mobile world, they have been successful because it has moved into more budget-friendly areas. Now Google will almost certainly do the same thing, loading good components into phones and bundling them together, filled with the industry's most impressive artificial intelligence.

With the development of mid-range equipment, there is no doubt that this is a lot, but more importantly, in our estimates, it can even surpass its so-called better brothers. It will be difficult for you to find such a pleasant smartphone experience at such a favorable price, and practical security measures make it an ideal choice for your next workplace device.
