The reasons you might want to take screenshots in Windows 11 are almost endless. Maybe you need to capture an app or web page to show others how to use its interface. Maybe you need to take an excerpt from an article and post it to social media, highlighting relevant parts to make a point. Or there may be a picture online or somewhere in one of your programs that you can't save in any other way.

No matter why you need screenshots, there are many different ways to take screenshots in Windows 11. The method you use should be based on what you need to capture, as some methods give you the entire screen, some just give you a zone and others give you options such as saving directly to disk or initiating a few seconds delay before saving the image.

Below, we'll cover six ways to capture screenshots in Windows 11, mainly using the operating system's built-in features. However, our last method uses NGWIN's PicPick, which is a freemium app that includes a built-in image editor capable of scrolling down an entire web page to turn an entire page into a screenshot, something that the operating system cannot do independently.

1. PrtSc Key captures screenshots to your clipboard

The easiest way to take a screenshot in Windows 11 or 10 is to click the PrtSc key and your entire desktop will be copied to the clipboard. Although simple, the PrtSc method is a bit clumsy. If you have multiple monitors, you'll grab all desktops in one big image, and if you want to save the image as a file, you'll still need to paste it into an image editor, such as Microsoft Paint, Gimp, or Photoshop .

On the other hand, if you just email an image, include it in a document, or post it to Twitter or Facebook, you can paste it by pressing CTRL + V into the relevant editor, and then everything is ready, provided you want to display the entire screen.

2. Windows key + PrtScr Save file

If you just want to take a screenshot of the entire screen, save it as a file and continue, the easiest way is to click Windows Key + PrtScr. Your entire desktop will be dimmed for one second to show that screenshots have been captured and a new PNG file will be saved to the Pictures/Screenshots folder. Each file will be named Screenshot (#).png, where #is replaced with 1, 2, 3, etc.

3. Alt + PrtScr Capture the active window

Typically, you don't want to capture the entire desktop, just the relevant programs you're using. If you press Alt + PrtScr, Windows 11 will capture only the active window and copy it to the clipboard.

It is important to note that if the application has multiple windows, this will only take screenshots of the active windows, not of the entire application. So, for example, if your program has a pop-up menu that appears in a child window, it captures only the child window, not the parent window behind it.

4. Snip & Sketch tool Snapping area

Perhaps you want to capture only a small portion of your desktop. It can be part of a web page or a series of windows in a browser. In any case, press Windows Key + Shift + S and the Windows Snip & Sketch tool launches, immediately giving you a rectangular box where you can draw whatever you want to capture in Windows 11.

If you don't want to clip rectangular portions of the desktop, you can also choose to free-draw shapes, capture the active window, or full-screen. Your picture will be captured to the clipboard, but you'll also receive a Windows notification showing what you captured, and if you click it, you'll open the Sketch section of the Screenshot and Sketch Tools, where you can draw your screenshot, crop it, or highlight parts of it with a yellow highlighter.
