A large portion of carbon dioxide emissions come from the transport sector. In Europe, nearly 40% of traffic emissions come from trucks. Now, researchers from Lobsang EPFL in Switzerland have come up with a new concept that can capture carbon dioxide from truck exhaust and reduce emissions by up to 90%.

In a paper published in the journal Frontier in Energy Research, researchers suggest capturing carbon dioxide from a truck's exhaust pipe, converting it into a liquid, and storing it in a roof tank. The liquid carbon dioxide can then be transported to service stations, where it can be reused in a variety of ways, including conversion to conventional fuel.

Carbon dioxide is captured by first cooling the gas discharged from the exhaust pipe. Special absorption materials developed by EPFL can separate carbon dioxide from other gases, such as nitrogen and oxygen. When filled, the absorbing material is then heated to extract carbon dioxide, and the heat from the vehicle engine is used to compress the carbon dioxide and convert it into liquid. The liquid can then be stored in a box connected to the roof until the truck refuels and can be stored at the maintenance station.

The system is very heavy and requires capsules with a length of 2m, accounting for 7% of the total payload of trucks, so it is more suitable for large vehicles such as trucks or buses than trucks. However, the researchers calculated that 90% of carbon dioxide emissions could be recycled in this way.

At present, the system is just a concept, and researchers estimate that it will take several years to implement it in the real world. The next step is to develop the system prototype and test the experimental elements in practice.
