2. Formation stage

The second generation computer network from the mid-1960s to the 1970s is based on the interconnection of multiple hosts through communication lines to provide services for users, which emerged in the late 1960s. The typical representative is ARPANET developed with the assistance of the Advanced Research projects Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense. The hosts are not directly connected by lines, but are connected by the interface message processor (IMP) after transfer. IMP and the interconnected communication lines between them are responsible for the communication tasks between hosts, which constitute a communication subnet. The hosts interconnected with communication subnets are responsible for running programs, providing resource sharing, and forming resource subnets. 3. The stage of interconnection

The third generation computer network from the late 1970s to the 1990s is an open and standardized network with a unified network architecture and abiding by international standards. After the rise of ARPANET, the computer network has developed rapidly, and the major computer companies have launched their own network architecture and software and hardware products to achieve these structures. Because there is no unified standard, it is very difficult to interconnect the products of different manufacturers, so people urgently need an open, standardized and practical network environment, which gives rise to two most important international architectures, namely, TCP/IP architecture and OSI architecture of International Organization for Standardization.

4. High-speed network technology stage

Since the 1990s, the fourth generation computer network, due to the mature development of local area network technology, the emergence of optical fiber and high-speed network technology, the whole network is like a large computer system transparent to users, developed into the Internet represented by the Internet.
