Google is expanding Markdown support for Web version of Google Docs to help users format their documents using text shortcuts. The service already provides support for some Markdown syntax, and it does not have full Markdown support with the latest updates. Instead, Google has just added support for more Markdown syntax, which will allow users to add titles and links to their documents and format text.

In a blog post emphasizing updates, Google said that Docs already supports Markdown syntax for bulleted lists, numbered lists, and check boxes. With the update, Google added Markdown support for the following:

As The Verge points out, Google is using the autocorrect feature in Google Docs to implement its Markdown. This means that whenever you type text in Markdown format, the service will automatically format your text. However, because not all Google Docs users are familiar with Markdown, this feature is not enabled by default. You must navigate to the preferences section of the tools menu to enable the Auto detect Markdown option.

It is worth noting that the extended Markdown support in Google Docs is being rolled out in phases, so you may not have seen the options mentioned above. Google said it could take more than 15 days for the feature to reach all users. In addition, the company revealed that the feature will apply to all Google Workspace customers, older G Suite Basic and Business customers, and even customers with personal Google accounts.

If you are not familiar with Markdown, here is a brief description of how to use it to format documents in Google Docs:

Use Markdown to make text italic, bold, and strikethrough

To format text in italics, enclose it in a single asterisk or underscore.

To format text in bold, enclose it in two asterisks or underscores.

To format text in italics and bold, enclose it in three asterisks or underscores.

To format the text with a delete line, enclose it in a dash.

Add links using Markdown

Write the text of the link in parentheses (for example, [Google Docs]).

Note: do not include spaces between the text in parentheses and the URL in parentheses.

Create a title using Markdown

Start at the beginning of the paragraph.

Add a numeric symbol (#) before the title text. The number of numeric symbols you use corresponds to the title level.
