On December 11, 2018, enterprise Kubernetes management platform Rancher Labs (hereinafter referred to as Rancher) announced a partnership with British chip designer Arm to meet customer deployment needs for the Internet of things and edge computing. In the future, Rancher Kubernetes Engine (RKE) and Rancher OS can be ported to Arm, and the enhanced Rancher server can manage x86 clusters running in data centers, as well as Arm clusters running on edge computing and data center nodes, providing the world's first solution for Kubernetes clusters running on both Arm and x86. No matter which architecture the user chooses to use, Rancher will provide an end-to-end solution for running Kubernetes in the enterprise. In addition, Rancher and Arm will join forces to provide Kubernetes-based solutions for smart city projects in China.

Rancher Kubernetes Engine (RKE) is a lightweight installer for Kubernetes that packages all Kubernetes components in a Docker container. Installing Kubernetes in this way eliminates the dependence of standard installers on the underlying infrastructure and makes cluster installation and upgrade faster, easier, and more secure.

The Rancher Kubernetes platform for the Internet of things platform and edge nodes released this time includes the Rancher 2.1 Arm port and Rancher OS 1.5 launched in October 2018. Rancher and Arm create a Kubernetes-based computing platform for the Internet of things, edge computing, and data center nodes. Rancher Kubernetes Engine (RKE) and Rancher OS are portable to Arm, all edges and data centers will form a cluster in the same location, the standard x86 Kubernetes cluster running in the central data center is used to process and analyze large amounts of data collected from edge nodes, and a single Rancher server is used to manage all x86 and Arm Kubernetes clusters.

This flexibility will continue as users shift their attention from deployment to cluster management. All the features of Rancher, including intuitive UI, centralized authentication, and easy deployment and management of Kubernetes workloads, can run on clusters running on Arm and x86 platforms.

After the release of Neoverse, many infrastructure processor vendors, software vendors and partners expressed strong support, including Marvell, Xilinx, Broadcom, TSMC, Mellanox, Synopsys, Cadence, SUSE and RedHat. Among them, AWS has officially announced at the end of November that it has developed a new AWS Gravition processor based on the Arm Neoverse "Cosmos" platform and has been introduced into AWS EC2 A1.
