On December 11, 2018, enterprise Kubernetes management platform Rancher Labs (hereinafter referred to as Rancher) announced a partnership with British chip designer Arm to meet customer deployment needs for the Internet of things and edge computing. In the future, Rancher Kubernetes Engine (RKE) and Rancher OS can be ported to Arm, and the enhanced Rancher server can manage x86 clusters running in data centers, as well as Arm clusters running on edge computing and data center nodes, providing the world's first solution for Kubernetes clusters running on both Arm and x86. No matter which architecture the user chooses to use, Rancher will provide an end-to-end solution for running Kubernetes in the enterprise. In addition, Rancher and Arm will join forces to provide Kubernetes-based solutions for smart city projects in China.
"Arm's homegrown Neoverse processor provides a huge advantage in expanding computing power that can accommodate trillions of connected device requirements," said Kevin Ryan, senior director of Arm software ecosystem solutions. "the partnership between Arm and Rancher gives thousands of organizations the power of the Neoverse ecosystem for cloud-to-edge computing."
Provide customers with a flexible architecture for the Internet of things, edge computing and smart cities
Rancher Kubernetes Engine (RKE) is a lightweight installer for Kubernetes that packages all Kubernetes components in a Docker container. Installing Kubernetes in this way eliminates the dependence of standard installers on the underlying infrastructure and makes cluster installation and upgrade faster, easier, and more secure.
The Rancher Kubernetes platform for the Internet of things platform and edge nodes released this time includes the Rancher 2.1 Arm port and Rancher OS 1.5 launched in October 2018. Rancher and Arm create a Kubernetes-based computing platform for the Internet of things, edge computing, and data center nodes. Rancher Kubernetes Engine (RKE) and Rancher OS are portable to Arm, all edges and data centers will form a cluster in the same location, the standard x86 Kubernetes cluster running in the central data center is used to process and analyze large amounts of data collected from edge nodes, and a single Rancher server is used to manage all x86 and Arm Kubernetes clusters.
This flexibility will continue as users shift their attention from deployment to cluster management. All the features of Rancher, including intuitive UI, centralized authentication, and easy deployment and management of Kubernetes workloads, can run on clusters running on Arm and x86 platforms.
"this is a game change, and the partnership with Arm enables our customers to deploy the Internet of things, edge computing and data center nodes based on Kubernetes clusters," said Shannon Williams, co-founder and vice president of marketing of Rancher. "Rancher is becoming a common management plane, and Kubernetes actually provides the capability of all workloads from data center to edge computing."
Repeatedly recognized by giants to jointly build container ecology
ARM is a company dedicated to leveraging semiconductor computing and communications capabilities to change the way people live and do business. its advanced and energy-efficient processors have produced about 130 billion processors and are used by 70 percent of the world's population. Arm Neoverse, a brand new brand launched by Arm in mid-October, aims to provide diversified, high-performance, secure and scalable solutions for infrastructure in a trillion-class smart device environment.
"in the next decade, there will be a lot of inventions and innovations to support new infrastructure," Drew Henry, senior vice president and general manager of infrastructure at Arm, specifically said at the Neoverse launch.
Patrick Moorhead, chief analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, said: "with Arm Neoverse's specially built IP, it will be able to support many computing needs ranging from super-large scale to edge access."
After the release of Neoverse, many infrastructure processor vendors, software vendors and partners expressed strong support, including Marvell, Xilinx, Broadcom, TSMC, Mellanox, Synopsys, Cadence, SUSE and RedHat. Among them, AWS has officially announced at the end of November that it has developed a new AWS Gravition processor based on the Arm Neoverse "Cosmos" platform and has been introduced into AWS EC2 A1.
Overall, Neoverse actually shows ARM's dominant confidence at the hardware level from the end to the cloud. In fact, the goal of Rancher is to empower infrastructure.
Founded in 2014 by Silicon Valley cloud computing leader Liang Sheng, the father of CloudStack, Rancher Labs is a professional company specializing in providing container-related products and solutions for enterprises. Since its inception, Rancher has been committed to building an open container ecosystem with the core of helping container technology to be implemented on the ground, and has maintained close cooperation with major public cloud, operating system, storage, security and other vendors, including Docker, AWS, Google, Microsoft, Huawei, Aliyun, Tencent Cloud, Ubuntu and other industry giants.
Several public cloud giants around the world officially fully support the Rancher Kubernetes platform. Rancher is the only enterprise-class open source Kubernetes management platform that has partnered with all leading cloud providers to support their hosted Kubernetes clusters. With the launch of Rancher 2.0, Rancher took the lead in supporting Google Cloud Container Service (GKE), Amazon Cloud Container Service (EKS) and Microsoft Cloud Container Service (AKS).
In November 2018, Rancher expanded its full support for Huawei Cloud Container engine (CCE), Ali Cloud Container Service (ACK) and Tencent Cloud Container Service (TKE) in China. Rancher is the only container hybrid cloud platform supported by China's three cloud giants at the same time.
In April 2017, Docker announced the integration of Docker Enterprise Edition (Docker EE) into the Rancher container management platform. Users can directly access Docker EE through the easy-to-use Rancher interface, and can purchase technical support services for Docker EE and Rancher container management platforms from Rancher Labs.
At the end of 2017, Rancher partnered with Canonical, a subsidiary of Ubuntu, to launch an application delivery platform based on Ubuntu, Kubernetes and Rancher 2.0-Cloud Native Platform (Cloud Native platform, referred to as CNP), which provides users with a complete end-to-end Kubernetes management solution.
Repeatedly recognized by the industry, it is precisely because of Rancher Labs's own excellent products and its leading position in Docker and Kubernetes ecosphere. Rancher Kubernetes platform is one of the first platforms in the world to pass CNCF Kubernetes consistency certification. Shannon Williams, co-founder of Rancher Labs, is a member of CNCF Management Committee, and co-founder Darren Shepherd is also one of only four top individual contributors to Docker Governance Council (DGAB), Docker's ecological core organization. Rancher has also received a lot of recognition from international authorities, and has been rated as the coolest container cloud infrastructure provider in the world by Gartner, and is in the "leader" quadrant in Forrester enterprise container platform research.
Conclusion
In this cooperation, the potential Arm will bring fertile soil to the container industry, coupled with efficient container management tools such as Rancher, it is bound to create the greatest value for customers in the coming trillion-level smart device era.
