This article shows you how to compare and distinguish between GVRP and VTP. The content is concise and easy to understand. It will definitely make your eyes shine. I hope you can gain something from the detailed introduction of this article.
Brief Introduction to GVRP Protocol
GVRP is an application of GARP, which is based on the working mechanism of GARP, maintains VLSN dynamic registration information in switches and propagates this information to other switches. All switches that support GVRP can receive VLAN information from other switches and dynamically update local VLAN registration information, including current VLAN members, which ports these VLAN members can reach, and so on. Moreover, the switch supporting GVRP characteristics can propagate local VLAN registration information to other switches, so that VLAN information of all devices supporting GVRP characteristics in the same switching network is consistent. VLAN registration information propagated by GVRP includes both static registration information manually configured locally and dynamic registration information from other switches.
VTP Protocol Introduction
VTP is similar in function to GVRP and is a Layer 2 protocol used to dynamically register VLAN configuration information on other switches in the switched network. Configure a new VLAN information on a VTP Server, and the information will be automatically propagated to all switches in the domain, thus reducing the workload of configuring the same information on multiple devices and facilitating management. VTP information can only be propagated on Trunk ports.
What are the similarities and differences between GVRP and VTP?
Same points:
Both are Layer 2 protocols that dynamically register and delete VLANs across Ethernet switches, and protocol message interactions between switches must be performed on VLAN Trunk links.
Difference:
a. GVRP is a protocol based on GARP formulated by IEEE; VTP is a private protocol developed by CISCO. At present, Huawei and other switches also support VTP protocol;
b. The GVRP protocol advertises the local VLAN information to other switches through the attribute declaration-registration mechanism, while the VTP protocol realizes the sharing of VLAN information by checking the configuration version number information in the advertisement message, and the switch with the lower version number learns from the switch with the higher version number.
The number of supported VLANs varies, GVRP supports VLAN IDs ranging from 1 to 4094, while VTP only supports VLANs 1 to 1001.
Comparison of GVRP and VTP in Practice
In specific applications, VTP supports server-client mode, that is, establish VTP domain on the main switch, set the main switch as VTP Server, and then set it as VTP client on the branch switch. In this way, only need to establish VLAN on the main switch, and it will notify any switch in the local area network, so as to facilitate centralized management.
GVRP is relatively cumbersome. It needs to establish VLAN on each switch, and first run gvrp command globally on each switch (whether it is a main switch or a branch switch) to enable gvrp function, and then run gvrp command on trunk aggregation connection to enable GVRP function. Only in this way can VLAN notification established on this switch be registered to other switches in the local area network.
It can be seen that GVRP is a protocol based on GVRP formulated by IEEE, and VTP is a protocol developed by manufacturers. Therefore, GVRP is applicable to a wide range of applications, but VTP is more convenient to set, and is conducive to centralized management of equipment. It is widely used in VLAN division.
However, since VTP mode essentially copies VLANs divided on the core switch to all branch switches in the local area network, VLAN broadcasts in the entire network will still propagate on the aggregation connection, which will increase the burden on the core switch. GVRP essentially divides VLAN on each switch, and limits unnecessary VLAN broadcast through GVRP reduction mechanism, so that VLAN broadcast of main switch and sub-switch is relatively balanced, reducing CPU occupancy of main switch, so GVRP has better performance in large network.
While current switches support GVRP, they generally support VTP, but remember that these two protocols cannot be turned on at the same time.
The above is how to compare and distinguish between GVRP and VTP. Have you learned any knowledge or skills? If you want to learn more skills or enrich your knowledge reserves, please pay attention to the industry information channel.
