Describes how to configure Desktop Pools. In a Horizon View environment, three types of Desktop Pools are supported:

Automated Pool

Manual Pool

Terminal Services Pool

These three desktop pool modes are the three optional desktop pool types for Horizon View, which represent different technology implementation methods and space utilization and generation efficiency.

First, describe how to configure Automated Pool. The steps are as follows:

1. First, open the source desktop prepared in part11. After the optimization is completed (optimization can be completed using the optimization script provided by VMware), execute the ipconfig / release shown in the figure below, release its IP configuration information, and then shut down the machine to execute the snapshot:

2. Right-click on vCenter Server > Snapshot > Snapshot Manager > Take a new snapshot, and soon, the system will generate a snapshot, as shown below:

3. After that, log in to View Administrator Console > Inventory > Pools > Add, and prepare to add the desktop pool:

4. In the window shown in the following figure, select Automated Pool. So, what is Automated Pool and what are its benefits? To put it simply, let's say we have 500 users, but we don't want to generate 500 desktops, so we can use Automated Pool to generate on demand:

5. When selected, you will encounter two options in the next step, one is Dedicated and the other is Floating. The respective advantages are:

Dedicated-indicates that when a user logs in to this desktop pool to get a desktop, the desktop will belong exclusively to that user

Floating-Floating means that users get a desktop at random when they log in, and automatically return to the desktop pool after logging out. It is usually used for public users to display business requirements such as the system.

6. After configuring the above allocation mode, click Next to go to the next step. In the next step, you can choose two modes, one is Linked Clone, the other is Full Clone, and the advantage of Linked Clone is: suppose we have 500 virtual desktops, each 20GB has disk space, normally we should consume 20GB*500, and the space consumption is not cheap. If we choose Linked Clone mode, its space consumption will be greatly reduced. From the following figure, you can see why:

PS: in the figure above, you can see that after Linked Clone Desktop Pool is generated, it will generate a complete Replica on the original Base Image, as shown in the figure above.

7. After understanding, click the View Composer linked clones shown in the following figure, and select the available vCenter Server, as shown below:

8. After clicking Next, enter the ID, Display name and View folder of the Pool, as shown in the following figure:

9. After going to the next step, there are a series of options for setting this Pool, as shown in the following figure:

General option

State-Enable or the Pool of Disable

Connection Server Restrictions-this option restricts this Pool to only the specified VCS

Remote Policy Settings option

Remote Desktop Power Policy-this option indicates the power handling behind the User Logged Of or Disconnected desktop and supports Power Off, Suspend, Always Powered On and nothing.

Automatically Logoff After Disconnect-this option indicates how long it takes to log out of the virtual desktop after the Logoff virtual desktop. Support: log out immediately, log out within a specified time

Allow Users To Reset Their Desktop-whether users are allowed to reset virtual desktops in this place such as yes or no

Refresh OS Disk After Logoff-this option, if activated, automatically returns VMDK to its original state equivalent to recompose. This option is used with caution.

Remote Display Protocol option

Default Display Protocol-here you can choose either RDP or PCoIP or both, indicating the remote display protocol that the user chooses to log in by default

Allow User To Choose Protocol-this indicates whether users are allowed to select remote display protocols on demand, either Yes or No

Windows 7 Rendering-this option is set for the Aero theme of systems above Windows 7. After activation, you need to select a larger vRAM for this virtual desktop

Max Number Of Monitors-this option can be up to 4

Max Resolution Of Any One Monitor-how big is the resolution and pixels of a monitor

Adobe Flash Settings For Remote Sessions option

Adobe Flash Quality-choosing Lower Quality saves bandwidth at the expense of display performance

Adobe Flash Throttling-this option is used to limit Frames per second. The more Agressive, the more computing resources are consumed, but bandwidth is saved.

The above series of parameters can be set according to your needs.

10. In the next Provisioning Settings option, you can set the naming format of the virtual machine, such as: VMF-LC {n:fixed=2} in this example, as shown in the following figure:

Since we are testing the system, Pool Sizing chooses fewer desktops.

11. Here is the page to configure View Composer Disks. Configure the disk of For View Composer. You can configure Persistent Disk to store User Profile (desktop, my documents and other configuration information). The advantage is that the corresponding User Profile will not be destroyed when recompose these desktops. Of course, if you configure to use Persona Management, you don't have to consider this:

12. In the next Storage Optimization option, you can select storage tiering and store different types of disks as needed to ensure performance. As shown in the following figure, users can choose according to their own conditions:

13. In the following vCenter Settings, select Parent VM, Snapshot, VM folder location, Host or cluster, Resource pool, and Datastores, as shown below:

14. Then there is a very important point, Guest Customization. This option is an important factor to ensure that virtual desktops have different configurations after batch generation. Here you can choose Domain, QuickPrep or Sysprep, as shown below:

15. After clicking Next in the above figure, the system will finally prompt you to confirm the relevant configuration. If it is correct, check the Entitle users after this wizard finishes option.

To be continued. If you need details of the picture and text, you can download it from the materials uploaded by the blogger.
