What is a network topology diagram
The network topology diagram refers to the physical layout of various machines and equipment interconnected by transmission media, that is, which method connects computers and other machines in the Internet to each other. The topology draws the Internet equipment and connections of cloud servers and service centers. There are many kinds of topologies of the Internet, the key of which are star structure, ring structure and bus.
Advantages and disadvantages of using Network Topology Diagram Software
The network topology diagram is often drawn by the network topology diagram software, which allows users to easily add, modify, save and copy the network topology diagram. If these things are done by hand drawing, it will be a lot of trouble. But for the network topology diagram software, it is not a problem. In addition, for users who have the conditions to access the Internet, the network topology diagram in the form of software can undoubtedly be more easily shared with others.
Network topology graph classification star topology
The star structure is one of the oldest connections, and the phone we use every day belongs to this structure. Star structure means that each workstation is connected into a network in a star-shaped way. The network has a central node, and other nodes (workstations, servers) are directly connected to the central node. This structure takes the central node as the center, so it is also called centralized network.
This structure facilitates centralized control because the communication between end users must pass through the central station. Because of this feature, it also brings the advantages of easy maintenance and security. When the end user equipment shuts down due to failure, it will not affect the communication between other end users. At the same time, its network delay time is small and the transmission error is low. But the disadvantage of this structure is that the central system must be highly reliable, because once the central system is damaged, the whole system tends to be paralyzed. For this central system, dual-computer hot backup is usually used to improve the reliability of the system.
Ring network topology
Ring structure is widely used in LAN. The transmission media in this structure go from one end user to another until all end users are connected into a ring. Data is transmitted between nodes in one direction in a loop, and information is transmitted from one node to another. This structure obviously eliminates the dependence on the central system when the end user communicates.
The characteristics of the ring structure are as follows: each end user is connected to two adjacent end users, so there is a point-to-point link, but it always operates in an one-way way, so it is called the upstream end user and the downstream end user; the information flow flows in a fixed direction in the network, and there is only one path between the two nodes, so the control of path selection is simplified; each node on the loop is bootstrapped, so the control software is simple. Because the information source passes through each node serially in the loop, when there are too many nodes in the loop, it is bound to affect the information transmission rate and prolong the response time of the network; the loop is closed and not easy to expand; the reliability is low and a node failure will cause paralysis of the whole network; it is difficult to maintain and it is difficult to locate the fault of the branch node.
Bus topology
The bus structure is a way to connect all end users using the same media or cable, that is to say, the physical media of the connecting end users is shared by all devices, each workstation has equal status, and there is no central node control. most of the information on the public bus is transmitted serially in the form of baseband, and its transmission direction always spreads from the node that sends the information to both ends, just like the information transmitted by the radio station. Therefore, it is also called broadcast computer network. When receiving the information, each node checks the address to see if it matches the address of its own workstation, and then receives the information on the Internet.
One of the problems that must be solved in using this structure is to ensure that there are no conflicts when end users use media to send data. This is fairly simple when configuring a point-to-point link. If the link is half-duplex, it is only necessary to use a simple mechanism to ensure that the two end users work in turn. In the point-to-multipoint mode, access to the line is determined by inquiring on the control side. However, in the LAN environment, because all data stations are equal, the above mechanism cannot be adopted. In view of this, this paper studies a media access method used in bus-shared network: carrier sense multiple access with collision detection, abbreviated as CSMA/CD.
This structure has the advantages of low cost, flexible access of data end users, and the failure of site or one end user does not affect the communication of other sites or end users. The disadvantage is that only one end user can send data at a time, and other end users must wait until they get the right to send; the media access access mechanism is more complex; it is difficult to maintain, and it is difficult to find the fault of the branch node. Although there are some shortcomings mentioned above, due to the simple wiring requirements, easy expansion, end-user failure, additions and deletions do not affect the work of the whole network, so it is the most commonly used in LAN technology.
Distributed topology
Distributed network is a form of network that connects computers distributed in different locations through lines.
The network with distributed structure has the following characteristics: due to the use of decentralized control, even if a local failure occurs in the whole network, it will not affect the operation of the whole network, so it has high reliability; the shortest path selection algorithm in the network has less delay time, high transmission rate, but complex control; data links can be established directly between each node, and the information flow is the shortest. It is convenient for the sharing of resources throughout the network. The disadvantages are long cable for connecting lines, high cost, complex network management software, complex packet switching, path selection and flow control, and this structure is not used in general local area networks.
Tree topology
The tree structure is a hierarchical centralized control network. compared with the star type, its communication line length is shorter, the cost is lower, the node is easy to expand, and it is convenient to find the path, but except the leaf node and its connected lines, any node or its connected line failure will affect the system.
Reticular topology
In a mesh topology, there is a point-to-point link connection between each device in the network, which is uneconomical and is used only when each site sends information frequently. Its installation is also complex, but the system has high reliability and strong fault tolerance. Sometimes referred to as distributed architecture.
Cellular topology
Cellular topology is a commonly used structure in wireless LAN. It is characterized by point-to-point and multipoint transmission of wireless transmission media (microwave, satellite, infrared, etc.). It is a kind of wireless network, which is suitable for urban network, campus network and enterprise network.
Hybrid topological structure
Hybrid topology is a network structure which is composed of star structure or ring structure and bus structure, which can better meet the expansion of larger network and solve the limitation of transmission distance of star network. At the same time, it also solves the limitation of bus network in the number of connected users.
The advantages of hybrid topology: it is widely used, it solves the shortcomings of star and bus topology, and meets the actual needs of large companies. The expansion is quite flexible. High speed: because its backbone network uses high-speed coaxial cable or optical cable, the speed of the whole network should not be too limited. The disadvantage is that because the broadcast message transmission mode is still used, the bus length and the number of nodes will also be limited. The network rate of the same bus network structure will decrease with the increase of users. It is difficult to maintain, which is mainly restricted by the bus network topology. if the bus is cut off, the whole network will be paralyzed.
