Ubuntu zm remove or disable Dock, many novices are not very clear about this, in order to help you solve this problem, the following editor will explain for you in detail, people with this need can come to learn, I hope you can gain something.
How to access activity Overview without Ubuntu Dock
Without Ubuntu Dock, you may not be able to access the list of active or installed applications (you can access it from Dock by clicking the "Show applications" button at the bottom of Ubuntu Dock). For example, that's what happens if you want to use Plank Dock.
Obviously, if you install the Dash to Panel extension to replace Ubuntu Dock, that's fine. Because Dash to Panel provides a button to access an overview of activities or installed applications.
Depending on the software you plan to use to replace Ubuntu Dock, if you can't access the activity overview, you can turn on the "activity overview hotcorner" option and simply move the mouse over the upper left corner of the screen to open the activity overview. Another way to access the list of installed applications is to use the shortcut key: Super + A.
If you want to enable the activity Overview hotspot, use the following command:
Gsettings set org.gnome.shell enable-hot-corners true
If you want to undo this operation and disable the hot corner later, you need to use the following command:
Gsettings set org.gnome.shell enable-hot-corners false
You can use the Gnome Tweaks application (which is located in the "Top Bar" section of Gnome Tweaks) to enable or disable the "activity Overview hotcorner" option, which can be installed using the following command:
How sudo apt install gnome-tweaks removes or disables Ubuntu Dock
Below you will find 4 ways to get rid of Ubuntu Dock. The environment is under Ubuntu 18.04.
Method 1: remove the Gnome Shell Ubuntu Dock package
The easiest way to get rid of Ubuntu Dock is to delete the package.
This will completely remove the Ubuntu Dock extension from your system, but also remove the ubuntu-desktop meta packet. If you remove the ubuntu-desktop meta packet, there will be no immediate problem, because it has no effect on its own. Ubuntu-desktop metadata packets rely on the large number of packages that make up the Ubuntu desktop. Its dependencies will not be deleted or broken. The problem is that if you want to upgrade to a new version of Ubuntu in the future, no new ubuntu-desktop dependencies will be installed.
To solve this problem, you can install ubuntu-desktop meta-packages before upgrading to a newer version of Ubuntu (for example, if you want to upgrade from Ubuntu 18.04 to 18.10).
If you have no problem with this and want to remove the Ubuntu Dock expansion pack from the system, use the following command:
Sudo apt remove gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock
If you want to undo the changes later, simply install the extension using the following command:
Sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock
Or reinstall the ubuntu-desktop meta package (which will install any ubuntu-desktop dependencies you may have removed, including Ubuntu Dock), you can use the following command:
Sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop method 2: install and use a vanilla Gnome session instead of the default Ubuntu session
Another way to get rid of Ubuntu Dock is to install and use native Gnome sessions. Installing a native Gnome session also installs other software packages that the session depends on, such as Gnome documents, maps, music, contacts, photos, trackers, and so on.
By installing a native Gnome session, you will also get the default Gnome GDM login and lock screen themes instead of Ubuntu's default Adwaita Gtk themes and icons. You can easily change Gtk and icon themes using the Gnome Tweaks application.
In addition, the AppIndicators extension is disabled by default (so applications that use the AppIndicators tray will not appear on the top panel), but you can use Gnome Tweaks to enable this feature (in the extension, enable the Ubuntu appindicators extension).
Similarly, you can enable or disable Ubuntu Dock from a native Gnome session, which is not possible in a Ubuntu session (you cannot disable Ubuntu Dock from Gnome Tweaks when using a Ubuntu session).
If you don't want to install these additional packages for native Gnome sessions, then this method of removing Ubuntu Dock is not for you, please check out other methods.
If you don't have a problem with this, here's what you need to do. To install a native Gnome session in Ubuntu, use the following command:
Sudo apt install vanilla-gnome-desktop
Restart the system after the installation is complete. On the login screen, click the user name, click the gear icon next to the "Sign in" button, and then select "GNOME" instead of "Ubuntu", and then continue logging in.
If you want to undo this operation and remove the native Gnome session, you can clear the native Gnome package using the following command, and then remove its installed dependencies (the second command):
Sudo apt purge vanilla-gnome-desktopsudo apt autoremove
Then restart and select Ubuntu from the GDM login screen in the same way.
Method 3: hide Ubuntu Dock from the desktop instead of removing it
If you want to hide Ubuntu Dock from the desktop, but not remove it or use a native Gnome session, you can easily do this using the Dconf editor. The downside is that Ubuntu Dock still uses some system resources, and even if you don't use it on your desktop, you can easily restore it without installing or removing any packages.
Ubuntu Dock is hidden only from your desktop, and when you enter overlay mode (active), you can still see and use Ubuntu Dock from there.
To * hide Ubuntu Dock, navigate to / org/gnome/shell/extensions/dash-to-dock using the Dconf editor and disable the following options (set them to false): autohide, dock-fixed, and intellihide.
If you prefer, you can do this from the command line by running the following command:
Gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock autohide falsegsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock dock-fixed falsegsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock intellihide false
If you change your mind and want to undo this operation, you can use the Dconf editor to launch autohide, dock-fixed, and intellihide from / org/gnome/shell/extensions/dash-to-dock (set them to true), or you can use the following commands:
Gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock autohide truegsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock dock-fixed truegsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock intellihide true method 4: use Dash to Panel extension
Dash to Panel is a highly configurable panel of Gnome Shell and a good alternative to Ubuntu Dock or Dash to Dock (Ubuntu Dock is forked from Dash to Dock). Installing and starting the Dash to Panel extension disables Ubuntu Dock, so you don't need to do anything else.
You can install Dash to Panel from extensions.gnome.org.
If you change your mind and want to use Ubuntu Dock again, you can disable Dash to Panel using the Gnome Tweaks application, or remove Dash to Panel completely by clicking the X button next to the following URL: https://extensions.gnome.org/local/.
